  1. Well, THIS is a surprise! Wait........no. No, it isn't. Anyway, in head-to-head competition, Crown won 11 comps to BD's 10, with 1 tie. In the TOC Cup, Crown outscored BD 635.3 to 633.75. There was no gift. There was some serious competition going on, and I think they both pushed each other all season long. For our benefit as well as theirs. Did you just copy and paste this from 2008, and change the names from Pipitone and Prosperie to Fugett? Garry in Vegas
  2. Not to take anything away from your brilliant post, but there are exceptions to this statement. Fortunately, they're in a tiny minority. You forgot VK. Garry in Vegas
  3. So glad to hear the they all have a spokesman in you. :tongue:/>/>/>/> It's not the fingerings that were the challenge, unless everything you read was written in concert pitch and you had to transcribe. A "C" on a G bugle has the same fingerings as a "C" on a Bb trumpet. It's that way all the way through the scale. The challenge was training your ear to hear a different fundamental pitch. That "C" on the G bugle was a concert G, or a concert Bb on the trumpet. As stated in other posts, the G soprano bugle is pitched a minor third below the Bb trumpet. Tape down the third valve on your Bb trumpet and you essentially have a 2V G bugle. As far as the baritones and contras went, IIRC, baritones, trombones and tubas are written in concert pitch, but the G bugle parts were written in G. Plus the odd habit of writing all the G bugle parts in Treble clef. BINGO! G bugles were always a special order item, whether you got them from Ludwig, Whaley-Royce, Smith, Olds, Getzen, King/American Heritage, or Kanstul. The fact is, you can still get them. Their price is lower than comparable Bb/F instruments. Write a check and they'll make them for you, because Kanstul and Dynasty (DEG) still have the tooling. Plus, they use the same tubing, bells, lead pipes and valves. Just more of the tubing. Dynasty Bugles Kanstul bugles Garry in Vegas
  4. I should add that my younger daughter, Olivia, is 8, but 9 in drum corps years. My lovely bride was pregnant with her when we did the Chinese New Year parade with the Renegades in 2004. She was in the St. Patrick's Day parade with Renegades at 4 months, went to her first field show (and was on the field with Tom Peashey) at 8 months, and was in the Chinese New Year parade again at 15 months. 5. George likes to win as much as anybody. But I truly think he is more immersed in the members having a great experience, and they achieve that through hard work, focus on the goal, and other affirming lessons. Write this date down when I defended George Hopkins. Garry in Vegas
  6. If you go way back to the first edition of Regiment (1956-65), there were a couple of years when they had an all-male guard. FWIW. Garry in Vegas (and married to a Phantomette)
  7. Jeff has a ton of integrity, and always plays fair. He's not a "homer". He saw Regiment as a 9th place percussion section last night. Some other judges could take lessons in integrity from Jeff. So, now can we put away the rumor that Jeff and JJ "gave" the championship to Regiment in 2008? Garry in Vegas
  8. Leave the guard alone. But, yeah, there needs to be some sort of shake up in percussion. Even if only 7 MCM members came to the corps, the same teaching and arranging techniques should have had similar results with a different roster. How many UNT people came to Regiment and SCV with Paul? How many UMASS people to Blue Stars with Tom? You can't rely on the other ensemble to provide personnel to the drum corps. Take SCV for an example. Yes, several Regiment people went with Paul that first year. But they should all be aged-out by now, and SCV is still vying for the Sanford each year.
  9. 1 Crown follows the curve of the Universe instead of a gestraight line to LOS and arrives 10 years too late. They score a 0 in 2023 due to late penalties, but still win the Spirit of Disney award for their crowd-pleasing "retro" show. Joe Allison, speaking from his HoverChair, says, " I haven't seen anything like this since 2013.I Garry in P
  10. Old enough to know better and too young to care. That makes me 59 in Earth years, 8 1/2 in dog years, and 43 in drum corps years. Marched junior corps in the early 70's, taught junior corps in the early 80's, served as a Board of Directors member and all-age corps founder/director in the early 2000's, and sent dozens of HS kids into drum corps from the mid-70's up to two years ago, my last teaching gig.
  11. Or any of the other 33 corps. Garry in Vegas
  12. Hey, Evan? Dust off your copy of Glass' "Einstein On the Brach". It will explain everything, including the counting. And, yes, your Cavaliers are much improved since I saw them 3 1/2 weeks ago in DeKalb. You're also correct that you have to experience Crown's brass live. Amazing. Garry in Vegas
  13. There were quite a few bandos at my location who found it necessary to laugh and giggle st the "front man" for ESarn. His performance was pretty typical for some types of entertainment in Thailand. It's too bad the kids couldn't understand the cultural differences. Some of them quieted down a bit when I told them he'd probably laugh his ### off watching their band. But, in the end, they all applauded. Probably because it was pretty clear the ESarn kids could play!

  15. I would get there a little early and ask to see the manager. It's worked at other sites over the years. Tell him/her that comparable sound levels to Man of Steel or Iron Man 3 would be appropriate. Garry in Vegas
  16. I have a choice of 5 or 6 theatres here in Las Vegas. Still trying to figure out which one to go to. Closest to home? The one that usually has the best turnout? Where are you going? And are you going to take advantage of the free Fan Network streaming before heading out to the theatre? Garry in Vegas
