  1. I still am of the opinion that if that particular corps doesn't need any part time volunteers, consider seeking out another corps to help out if you have one in the area. That may not be possible but it's a thought. My dad volunteered with Suncoast. I marched a different corps. In his mind it was about helping the activity, not a specific corps. But again, that may not be an option here. /shrug
  2. Hasn't he been around since the very early 90's? I seem to remember him coming in and maybe Gordon Cagle not judging as much around the same time.
  3. Exactly. I know Spirit is asking for help at several of their stops on tour for even just a day. But not knowing what specific corps it is, it's really hard to say.
  4. I've never heard of a corps not needing help along certain stops on tour. That being said, if they've got plenty of volunteers then good on them! Maybe there is another corps that's close that could use some help? Though I can certainly understand wanting to support the corps that your son is marching in, the entire activity needs your support and I think your son would understand that. Just MHO though.
  5. I would agree 10000%. I couldn't imagine doing what these MM's do now when I marched and CERTAINLY not in the late 80's and early 90's uni's. I get that people like tradition. I'm that way in several aspects of my life. But the equipment has to change with the times and that includes uniforms (or costumes..whatever you want to call them. I call them uniforms....because well, they're UNIFORM from member to member.) The idea that we do what we do because it's what has always been done is a losing proposition. We have to learn to adapt and change our perspectives so that we can at least appreciate what is being done. I like the Colts Uni's. I'm not as much of a fan of Academy but I will need to see them on the field and in context to see if they make sense.
  6. Ohhhhhh wait! You said the Scarlet Pimpernel...not the Scarlet Pumpernickle. My bad.
  7. I actually like those. Though I'm tempted to call the show "Meanwhile...back in Germany" based on the "leather" and spikes.
  8. Don't sweat it man. The snark will only get better as you "ripen." It's your God given right to be as bitter and snarky as the rest of us.
  9. This is the one I usually save for a certain poster who shall remain anonymous Lancer. You're free to steal it for when the horse gets beaten again.
  10. And there in lies the danger of it right? It's fine to have a "fan favorite" caption that has no effect on placement. IMHO though, it's kind of a "everyone gets a trophy" mentality in a way. I feel like GE now isn't geared towards entertainment as much and would like to see that change. Unfortunately, you can't depend on the general public to actually follow rules, even if it is just an app.
  11. And I think maybe that's the balance I was hoping to have someone finally flesh out. If I add some context to Stu's idea of making judging a little less "sterile" and then also consider what Jeff and several others have mentioned regarding that judging has to be consistent, the response above meets right in the middle. This is supposed to be about precision AND entertainment after all. In theory (yes, I know that's a dangerous thing...,) those tapes/scores/etc SHOULD have a positive impact on GE. If I am watching the show and I truly can't follow what the #### is going on musically and visually, isn't that general effect in a nutshell? I wouldn't be comfortable with someone from the outside judging without training, but I don't think that's what was said. Hell, I wouldn't want to judge a line without a TON of training and I marched corps just like 99% of the people here. But I do like the idea of someone who isn't watching the show from the technical aspect of GE, giving feedback on it. Maybe not a score....but feedback would be awesome.
  12. And that's one of the best parts about the activity. The choices in music, theme / concept and design of the final product are incredibly subjective. I can see the point of saying "Let's hope it's a great show. Maybe it would be even better if there were some female composers' music in the show." But I can't see dooming a show due to political correctness before we have even heard the first note (much less seen the design, etc.) But that's my opinion and my opinion only.
  13. Every one of them appears to be a percussionist (read drummer) at heart looking at their duck feet. The one with the wee little guitar is pretty darn cute though LOL.
  14. "Rodent Regiment...you may now take the field in competition"
  15. I can honestly think of one without "The Google" and only because she came up in theory class like 422 times (though I can't remember her first name.) Mendelssohn's sister (I'm so glad I have 3 brain cells left from the lost 90-96 years.) I do see your point about missing an opportunity and even agree with that statement on it's own. I don't know if I would say that there is a failure though. The show (as I see it on the surface,) is about empowering the female gender. I don't feel that it is necessarily a requirement to have musical selections by women in order to do that. I think at this point I would see it as an "even better if" type of thing.
  16. And to think, we watched the 1970's Playboy version of Romeo and Juliet in British Lit class LOL. Then again, Brit-Lit teachers tend to be an odd breed (or at least they were in the mid-80's.) Oh how times have changed.....
  17. CV tried with CVI and lasted a few seasons. Now I think they're associated with Q2 if I'm not mistaken. Although we lack Drum Corps in the south, you can't walk through any large southern city without tripping over 2247 WGI groups....it's very weird.
  18. There's definitely a niche group of us who all fall into the same-ish age group (give or take a few years) and have that dark / twisted sense of humor. I'm really hoping to meet some of the DCP folks in ATL this year.
  19. As long as the percussion feature can be called "Would you care for another schnitzengruben?" I'm all in.
  20. The exact reason why I haven't posted anything to social media in years. In fact, outside of this and billiards forums, I limit my contact on social media as much as possible. Sometimes the line between what is right and what is absolutely silly gets crossed too many times. Having to defend musical selection choices based on the gender of the composer leaves me scratching my head. There are great male composers and great female composers. You should choose the music that fits your show. If your concept REQUIRES that all of the pieces be written by a specific gender then great! Do the #### thing and do it well. But this whole thing has crossed the line into "silly" at this point IMHO.
  21. I think a Mel Brooks show would have been the greatest non-pc show ever marched. I think DCA's Renegades missed a gem with that one. On the DCI side, VK could have possibly pulled it off.
