  1. It's OK, that's just Chewie! b**bs Despite what you might have heard, he's an alright kinda guy :P
  2. Hi guys, Does anyone know where I might find a gig bag for a baritone bugle? One of the older baris in our corps' inventory has a lightweight gig bag that's pretty cool, but has no label anywhere. I'd like to find one if I could. Thanks!
  3. I'm not that familiar with Schilke mps, although they have an excellant reputation. I just wanted to point out that baritones usually use a small-shank (tenor trombone) mouthpiece, and the bass bone will use a large-shank mp. Euphoniums usually use a large-shank mp. Just FYI...
  4. Yep, that's pretty much all it would take to make a party!!! ^0^
  5. Camel, That's got your name all over it!!! b**bs Just imagine Chewie's face it you pulled that out at practice. Better yet, pull it out at a performance!!! ^0^
  6. Lots of good advice in this thread! This last one is one of my favorites! Playing euph works all the same muscles as bari (air, chops, shoulders, etc)! Play euph awhile, and when you go back to bari, it feels TINY! You've got gobs of air! Good luck!
  7. Put rubber O-rings on the slide. Adjust the slide, then roll the O-ring down to keep it from sliding in.
  8. Jeff, Thanks! It didn't occur to me to look on a treble clef chart! DOH!
  9. Guys, I need a little help with the fingering for high notes. Baritone, playing bass clef. My fingering charts all stop at the second "E" above the bass clef. Does anyone have a chart that goes above that? Or, can you just list the fingerings for higher notes? Thanks!
  10. The first Drum Corps show I ever saw was 1980 Finals in B'ham. Two things really stuck with me over the years: 1) The Bridgemen were having more fun than humans should be allowed (and I wanted to help!) ^0^ b**bs 2) Spirit was UNBELIEVABLE! Definitely a palpable wall of sound. Like, if sound were water, and I was in a giant wave pool! At the end, when they turned back towards the pressbox in a company front and belted out "Let It Be Me" - Man, I'm getting goosebumps just remembering it!
  11. I've played both 2v and 3v baris. As I understand it, this is a matter of arranging the music to avoid needing the 3rd valve. You can also just play those parts up an octave - that should take care of the need for a 3rd valve.
  12. Ed, You have run across something that is very strange, and many musicians never discover! When playing a TC baritone (Treble Clef), you read the notes, and do the fingering the same as trumpet. "G" is open. When playing a BC bari (Bass Clef), you read the same as trombone, and the fingering correspond to 'bone slide positions: 1st position Open 2nd 2nd 3rd 1st 4th 1+2, or 3 5th 2+3 6th 1+3 7th 123 So, for BC bari, "F" is open. IT IS THE SAME NOTE AS TC "G". OK, so in a concert band / orchestra: Two baris are sitting side-by-side. One is reading TC, one is reading BC. When warming up, the band plays a "Concert Bb scale". The BC bari plays Bb scale (just like the 'bones). The TC bari is playing C scale (just like the trumpets). If you watch their hands, they are fingering exactly the same. There _is_ a reason for this insanity. Most bari players are originally trumpet or trombone players. So, the TC bari part is written for trumpet players to read and finger just like a trumpet. The BC part is written for 'bone players, and they just have to learn the fingerings like I wrote above. Now, at MCL, we have 6 different bari parts! 1st, 2nd, 3rd chair BC, and 1st, 2nd, 3rd chair TC. And, remember, we are playing in different keys and different fingerings (at least, in our heads). So, when Stephan and I are playing 1st, he is playing in the key of "C", and fingering a "G" open - I am playing in the key of Bb, and fingering an "F" open. But, we're actually playing the same thing! This is what drove Brent crazy about BC parts last year! In traditional drum corps, all parts (even contra) were written in TC, so there is no tranposing in drum corps! Nowadays, concessions have to be made for people coming from non-corps backgrounds! So, if you are reading TC, play it the same as a trumpet.
  13. You look at a horn and think "What do ALL these buttons do?" You wonder why the DM isn't carrying a mace. You think that "real corps" don't have a pit - only battery.
  14. Hi all, In addition to being a member (and Board member) of Music City Legend Drum and Bugle Corps, I am also an officer in the Vinemont High School Band Boosters. So, I have been tasked with locating inexpensive, but quality techs to do some repairs and reconditioning on school-owned instruments. Dent repair, occassional tubing replacement, replating, etc. Right now, we are focusing on brasswind instruments (cause I don't know much about them there "woodwinds"). So, guys, gimme the 411! Thanks!
  15. The King baris (1124) are excellant horns. Well-built, play great! They are also considerably lighter than any of the other horns - this could be an important factor in a HS Band. Kanstuls are wonderful horns, and if you are considering $950 for a Dynasty, you should just put that money toward Kanstuls! In the past couple of months, I bought a Kanstul baritone, AND a Kanstul baritone Grande. Together, I paid $950! Both horns are used. The Grande is in great shape. The standard baritone is practically new!!! My point being this: you would do better to buy a clean used Kanstul or King than to waste your money on a new Dynasty.
  16. I guess I'll "chime in": King 3B-F trombone, silver Kanstul 3V Baritone, G Kanstul 3V Grande Baritone, G King 2v Baritone, G Conn concert Bb baritone, lacquer (and "older than dirt") King 600 series trumpet King 605 trombone, lacquer (the first horn I every played) Selmer cornett (really old, but still plays)
  17. Well, on that note - I know that the Colts had some Kanstul Bari Grandes. I just bought one from them. Great horn, BTW!
  18. Hef, you must have recorded me warming up on my bari! b**bs b**bs b**bs
  19. Definitely get him checked by a chiropractor. Especially look for one who is sport-oriented. Good luck!
  20. Thanks, man! I'll check with them!
  21. Hi, Anyone who has a Kanstul G Bari, please contact me. Thanks!
  22. Camel, Fooled you - I'm not wearing socks!!! :P
