Shockwave: Edgier, more contemporary than Blast! A review by Michael Boo More than 4,000 theater-goers were treated to the premier performance of Shockwave, the new audio-visual extravaganza from the folks that brought us Blast!, on Sept. 28 at Eisenhower Hall Theatre at West Point, N.Y. Blue Devils this summer pulled off something that astounded me. (disclaimer - was in a dome, though) Was watching their show through Ragtime, and was thinking to myself that they just weren't as loud as they used to be. Rhythm Medley really wasn't doing anything to make me change my mind until the big reentry after the soloist. (Where the drums start playing upbeats.) That little section, without a doubt, was the loudest segment I've ever heard any single marching unit play. Period. It was so loud all I could feel was the pounding drums and all I could hear was the distortion of sound in my ears. Until I listened to the CD's in August, I had no clue as to *what* they were playing in that part. Simply incredible - so loud that all you could do was feel it. Mike

Personally, I thought Madison's 1995 show was almost perfect. Well, their 1996 one, too. If you could combine the two and use: El Toro Caliente Bolero La Danza Pasillo (or even En Fuego) Malaguena You'd be set. :) Mike

Not many corps to choose from here, but I'd say Cadets. Don't expect them to take the big trophy, but I think (like last year) they'll get brass and percussion. Mike

Tim, Great review! Reminded me of my first live show, too. (In 1996, got to see Phantom's Defiant Heart show. Wow.) If you're going to Finals, you're not going to believe what you see. Consider Blue Knights, and that they're on the bubble to even *make* Finals. Only goes up from there. :) Mike
