  1. I just figure that the Cavies three-peated, went undefeated once, set the record score first, and won 5 championships in 7 years Not even the Blue Devils can boast 5 championships in a decade...3 in the '70s, 3 in the '80s, 4 in the '90s, 3 in the past decade
  2. A couple years ago, I proposed a scoring system similar to what you have here....I think my weight was also 60-40 Jeff Fiedler replied to me...IIRC, he said that in 1994, they started brainstorming a way to make visual execution and music execution equal (yes, I'm using the word "execution" whether people like it or not) They also wanted "general" effect (the quotation marks are mine, not Fiedler's) to weigh a bit more than either music or visual execution separately The ultimate result was the system of scoring/weighting we've seen since 2000 (the addition and elimination of judges/captions being minor in this context)...the music and visual execution weighting is equal 30-30...effect weighting is a little more at 40 blah blah blah
  3. Visual Effect - Nola Jones, Rich Kemp Music Effect - David Starnes, Glen Fugett Field Visual - Robby Overvliet Ensemble Visual - Debbie Torchia Color Guard - Robert Soloman Brass - Steve Calhoun Ensemble Music - Joe Allison Percussion - Allan Kristensen
  4. Even so, this does concern me about the free webcast of retreat tomorrow night
  5. No, they won't....Robert Soloman will get confused by the mirrors and give them a "reflected" score...0.01
  6. http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/inde...howtopic=139994 Gotta go here...just don't read every post since the beginning of time
  7. Originally posted score was a number transposition
  8. Cadets and Santa Clara tied at 97.1 on 8/10/85...I think that's the only other instance of a corps breaking 97 before championship week
  9. You're thinking of the Cadets' '91 show...specifically Copland's Letter from Home
  10. Your thoughts on use of electronics as being on an equal timbral footing with the brass and percussion were EXTREMELY well-worded.... I still wish electronics would go away though...
  11. Jeff Mitchell has lurked on DCP in the past...if he's still around, hopefully he'll chime in
  12. Uh, the 2005 Cadets didn't destroy anybody until Quarterfinals 2002 Cavies, yes...and I can't believe you didn't mention last year's Blue Devils
  13. Michael Boo's blog again: "I agree this is not the cuddly show "Ballet for Martha" was, and it's not intended to be. The corps' 2009 show was like cuddling up with a good book. This year's show is more like the anticipation and on-edge anxiety of wondering when a rabid bear will break into the cabin and ###### the book from your hands before pawing you like a yo-yo and then stealing your cupcakes."
  14. Michael Boo: "This is a show both Joe Drum Corps and Joseph Sophisticate, III, esq. can look forward to hearing and seeing again.'
  15. This isn't meant to answer all questions and settle any issue, but it's worth posting Also....from 2004... The most global area of evaluation is known as effect. Music and visual presentations should create an effect unto themselves, triggering aesthetic responses to the intellectual and emotional design and performance. In essence, this is how we determine what is entertaining about a particular program. Effect captions are the most subjective to judge and yet there are established principles of design and performance practices which can determine what is effective. Effect judges are looking at the actual design of the show, the peaks and valleys of excitement throughout, and how the performers make the show successful. Questions a judge might consider in judging effect are: Do all of the elements of visual and musical design reach an effective climax together? Are there a variety of effects in the show that display a wide array of human emotions? Does the pacing of the show vary, remain steady, or have lapses? It is important to realize that it is not just the designers who control the effect but also the performers who bring the effects to life. The performers may be truly amazing musicians and superb marchers, yet they may have limited show material to work with. Eventually the effect wears thin. To be a good effect judge, one must have a depth of understanding of how shows are put together and how performers can not only interpret the design but also actually elevate its success.
  16. Geno could explain it better since he was marching with Madison.... To my knowledge, Madison and Phantom tied for 1st...they cleared the field and made them go again...Phantom won by a small margin
  17. Boo just posted that the show's been cancelled
