  1. That's what a lot of people think about the current system, especially when it comes to GE
  2. 1. emotional reaction - does it appeal to your gut? Does it evoke a range of emotions? 2. engagement - does it consistently hold your attention? 3. communication - is it clear what effect the performers are trying to achieve? 4. memorability - does it stick with you? 5. audience reaction - not just intensity, but whether positive or negative.
  3. Should there be a caption for Entertainment Value (EV)? GE is 40 points. Nobody understands it. Not even the judges seem to agree on what it means. A lot of people, like myself, think this is way too many points for a set of captions nobody really understands. Would it make more sense to have 20 points GE and 20 points EV? Would judges be able to evaluate EV? Would judges be any worse at evaluating EV than they are at evaluating GE? Would it make the audience feel any more appreciated? Would it make judging more transparent, or at least a little less inexplicable?
  4. Scouts made the right move with the short sleeves. 85 degrees in clifton at 7:30pm.
  5. Scouts fate is in their own hands. They beat BK and BAC in GE at Allentown, but were down in the performance captions. I hope they have time to do some cleaning before quarters.
  6. I agree with Matt. Plus Cavaliers tend to play things a bit closer to the vest as an organization. Also, there are only a handful of Cavalier alum/supporters who drop by DCP these days. Most of the guys keep in touch through the corps website, or the facebook page.
  7. 0.3 the difference between scouts and bac.
  8. No. Frameworks was entirely original AND accessible. the fact that the two shows are 8 years apart makes it that much worse. You wouldn't even think of comparing 80 BD to 72 Anaheim, or 2000 Cadets/Cavies to 92 Cavies. 90 Cadets to 82 BD? UUUUUUUUUH.....still no. But here ppl are defending BD against a show that is over one full generation of marchers older. A show that was marched by people now in their 30s. Some with kids old enough to march BDC. That's pretty hilarious.
  9. Finals were on Aug 8 last year as opposed to Aug 14 this year. so July 31 2009 was one week before finals whereas July 31 2010 is 2 weeks before finals.
  10. If you look at the rankings, I don't think there is any corps that you could reasonably move more than 2 spots up or down. In other words, I think the judges generally get the placements about right with an error of +/-2. The big issue this year, as every year, is demand. It seems like there should be an objective measure of demand, but there never is. And it always seems that judges are willing to reward a show that seems easy as long as it is well-executed. I think judges are maybe too willing to accept the argument that a good performing corps can make the difficult look easy. Most of what I perceive as judging inaccuracy is related to how they reward (or fail to reward) the difficulty and complexity of what different corps are doing. Performance? I think the judges generally get it just about right, or at least within 1 placement. Effect is subjective and pointless to argue about. It should not be 40% of the total score.
  11. not for some guys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TBvWyNHr34
  12. How about all caps and subcaps all three nights. Plus all I&E. Plus Spirit of Disney. Plus the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Plus the Indiana Mega Millions Lottery. Plus a Nobel Prize. Aim High :)
  13. You're either talking about BB2000 or you're not from Chicago.

  15. 0.2 behind BK 0.6 behind BAC 2 weeks to go...we got a full tank of gas, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses :)
  16. 16K in Old School plus 76K in Madison Corps Program plus 20K from Chase equals 112K in fundraising for Madison, and there are still 3 months left in the fiscal year. not to mention that merchandising and appearance fees should also be up this year. Hopefully they can pay off any remaining deficit and maybe even turn a surplus.
  17. that's only because 82 was so far ahead, it took 2 years for everyone to catch up :) Seriously, 82 was the "statement" year for the Cadets. It had all the elements of their later shows and was a clear departure from anything in 81. To me, it was a better show than 83. Remember their finals performance and how they surged from 5th to 3rd? One of the most electrifying performances I've ever seen. They might have been the best corps on the field that night. BD was unbeaten that year, but if Garfield had been a bit cleaner they could have challenged. you also have to consider that Cavaliers, from 83 onward, were a major innovator in the 80s due to Brubaker. And that would have happened with or without Garfield.
  18. Nor with Crown and as much as I admire the lushness and fullness of Crown and Coats, I think Boston, in particular, sounds more "live" and energetic. More "in your face." Maybe a bit too edgy for today's brass sophisto's, but that's the sound I like.
  19. For the quintessential shows of the 70s, you have to back much earlier to 1971-73 SCV. Those shows raised the bar in terms of both visual and musical sophistication more than any other corps in the 70s. Other corps were exploring new directions in 71, but SCV's vision is the one that resonated with the judges and the audience. In the 80s, it was Garfield '82 that raised the bar in terms of visual design. It set the stage for all of their championship shows. 71-73 SCV and 82 Garfield were more innovative in their respective time periods than anything I saw in the 90s. The most innovative shows of the 2000s, for my money, were Spin Cycle and Machine. But so far, nobody has attempted to imitate them, so I don't think you can say they changed the direction of the activity.
  20. At some point they need to address the volume issue because Madison Horns == Power. I'm not saying they should go back to park and blow or give up balance and sound quality. But other lines are putting out more sound with equal or better quality and Madison needs to match that. They might have to make a hard choice because they are a Yamaha dealer, and, imo, Yamaha horns do not have the best amplification or projection. To my ear, the lines that are playing on Kings (Boston, Blue Stars, BD) have a livelier and more energetic sound. The Yamaha sound is just a little too soft around the edges. It's a nice, dark sound, but it just doesn't project as well.
  21. Depends on the horn and the player. But in general, I don't think a Yamaha 8335 trumpet (either ML or L bore) is the first thing a lead player would go for. There are other trumpets that have a more open upper register. But the dynasty and Kanstul sopranos I do believe were designed for projection and range. Even a wimp like me can play easily above high C on those.
