What would you like to see in '08?

...DCI is not ignoring their older fans...lots of legacy fans attend shows. And...you have things like the classic countdown, the historical DVD's being released as well as alumni corps such as Anaheim and Bayonne performing at big shows...

I haven't seen any evidence that having alumni corps perform and selling historic shows are anything but cynical ploys to milk traditional fans, while DCI does whatever it #$%^ well wants.

I'd be pleased to see some evidence to the contrary...like...some changes in next years' show designs...

That's non sequitur BS, Mike. One corps spoke a whole lot, a few others did a little, and most didn't. This is the kind of nonsense that keeps chopping away at your credibility.

Pointing out that the word 'extreme' is in the eyes and ears of the beholder. Cadets use of narration was not 'extreme' in any sense of the word. It was appropriate for the show they decided to present.

So no, it is not 'nonsense'.

Actually - a lot of them were back in the day...Exhibit No. 1: Garfield's peace sign...Exhibit No. 2: the rebellion against VFW and American Legion (which was more than disagreement over rules)...

...that's why DCI's in the condition it is, now....IMHO

We marched a Peace Sign because that was one of the forms Bobby Hoffman decided we would march. Just about all of us were there the very next year when we presented the Revolutionary War show...how was that "America hating"?

Can't open it - maybe somebody could post that on youtube....
...Here's a link to a video of a keyed bugle, way before modern corps c.1850. Off topic a bit, but if you're a horn player, it's pretty neat if you've never seen or heard one before. Trying to picture some screaming parts on it. Can't.

pre pre pre DCI keyed bugle being played

You'll need real player to open the file. Forgot to mention that. It's a neat clip, though.

Ah, "It was appropriate for the show they decided to present."

Beautiful.

OK - peace offering (!) - I'll give Garfield a pass on "America hating" due to lack of evidence...

...apparently you agreed with the rest of the characterization of "pot smoking, flag burning, socialist pamphlet making...heathens..." though :) (note: said characterization was not aimed at Garfield)

Baloney - ballet doesn't compete head-to-head with oil painting, or rodeo, photography or any other "art"...

I'll see your baloney and raise you a pimento loaf...

Ballet doesn't compete at all, nor do any of the arts. That's exactly the point. When was the last time the NY ballet faced off against Philadelphia? Did Bartok compete against Copland? Did Brahms compete against Wagner? If so, who won?

What are the rules of art? What are the rules of performance? What are the rules of ballet? What are the rules of photography? I'd really like to know. Please, list them for us.

And when did rodeo become an art?

Not that it could be enforced by a rule, but I 'd like to see every corps perform as if it were a championship encore performance.

This was my first time going to finals since 2000, and more than I can ever remember, I could really feel the tension, specifically for BD and the Cadets. While I could sense the great moments in both of these shows (and others), and I said wow many, many times, I couldn't help feeling the shows were almost sterilized by a palpable paralyzing fear (might not be the right word) on the part of the performers. Now, when BD did their victory encore performance, it was like an entirely different show, performance-wise and energy-wise. Really spectacular. I can only imagine that the Cadets would have been the same had they won.

So, in short, I'd like corps to really let loose on their finals night performance. After all, according to a lot of people in here, the decision about who's going to win is decided well before Saturday night, so why not throw down? :P

Well, we did distribute a "No More War" poster in 72, the theme of THAT show!
