Use of Electronic Instruments

Music from instruments such as electronic keyboards, synthesizers, electronic drum sets, and all

other electronic instruments are allowed given that the instrument’s performer(s) are present and

performing live and in real time.

The use of melodic, harmonic and rhythmic (musical) sampled (pre-recorded/sequenced) sounds

of human voices, wind instruments, and percussion instruments will not be allowed.

Sounds other than music (such as sound effects, and non-musical human voice) that are pre-

recorded and/or sequenced (sampled) can be used without penalty. Any pre-recorded sounds

used that are copyrighted require all necessary and proper permissions be obtained for their use.

Note: For performance purposes, music (or musical) shall be defined as the organization of

melodic, harmonic and rhythmic sound through time and should only be performed live and in real

time by performers that are present and participating in the performance. Sampled sounds will be

defined as sounds that are pre-recorded and/or sequenced, and triggered by the use of an

electronic instrument(s) during a performance. Music (as defined above) cannot be sampled. All

other sounds are considered sound effects and therefore can be sampled.

May I remind all that this means you can sample and play an oboe, clarinet, or other instrument currently illegal? This proposal effectively legalizes woodwinds.

No. Read closer...

The use of melodic, harmonic and rhythmic (musical) sampled (pre-recorded/sequenced) sounds

of human voices, wind instruments, and percussion instruments will not be allowed.

But I'd still rather not have it.

You should read much, much closer.

It's saying that you cannot use sequenced samples. It doesn't say that you can't play back sampled instruments that are not sequenced.

And absolutely, no thanks. No Yanni, please.

Even so... it's not a good idea under any circumstance. I don't want to argue semantics; there are no conditions where this is good!!

you are right though...it is saying you can pre record that oboe solo...but feel free to put the keyboard in oboe mode and play away...

what's this...the cadets are doing a clarinet and flute duet this year on the keyboard..yea...no thanks..

No.

...but it will pass anyway. The "creative minds" in the design subcommitee will push this on through, and you'll get to see lots of fun shows built around the brilliante sound of the oboe, violas, and whatever else a lazy designer wants to try out for his marching bands he writes for the next year.

Whatever creative gain we could get out of this will be lost as most designers will just use even more creative shorthand in a show...and keeps on keeping on until we're all one big happy homogenous educational super-happy-fun time.

Yay.
