Drum Corps Sheet Music

Some people would like to just play without the extra hard work.

Yes, those would be the ones that don't deserve to play.

Even if you do get the printed music, there's no guarantee that that is what was actually played on any recordings. We always made some changes during a given season when I marched. Most of which never made it to any of the printed versions.

That is true. If you look at my original 1983 music parts and listen to what we actually played that year, you would find some significant differences and even more music than what was written in some tunes and less in others. So getting copies of someone's music parts may not guarantee that you have the same thing they played in Finals.

Regardless, It is at the very least a skeleton of what the finals show is like. I don't really find a big deal with this. He knows that it isn't the same thing. But at the very least, it's similar.

You'll learn far more and become a much better musician if you learn to transcribe it.

Just a thought.

Wow, ya mean everyone in a DCI corps is gonna become a professional musician. :worthy:

LOL, couldn't resist as wish I had some of my old charts but as a Unix Computer Specialist (IOW, program, set up systems, Oracle database work, etc, etc) my transcribing skills suck. Heh, extent of my music skills is reading the notes and making the right sound come outta the horn. :wall:

Transcribing will help you as a musician in the long run.

The entire history of drum corps is based on non-musicians. It's only been very recently that musicians have become the majority of the corps. Most drum corps "back in the day" took kids literally off the street, gave them a horn and said "play this". There was very little music education in school, and if there was, instrumental lessons were very few and far between.

So to say that the non musical people don't deserve to play is to go against the very foundation of the activity.

But what do I know, I'm just a history teacher, I probably don't deserve to play (or comment) either.

That very well may be true. However, his request was not opened up out of a time capsule. He asked this very recently. And as far as my opinion that non musical people should learn to be musical going against the activity. Ha! The activity itself has so badly degregaded itself from it's own foundation...and yet my opinion has gone against the "foundation" of the activity?! That, my friend, is laughable.

So you're saying that non-music majors should learn to learn to transpose or they "don't deserve to play"? Some of us have more important things to do with our lives than learn to transpose. Our to paraphrase socks post, I put my extra hard work into other things.

Would be like me saying that people should learn to program or they don't "deserve" to be on a PC. Or Andrew saying that unless you're a teacher you don't "deserve" to try to teach someone.

Wish I could find the older thread on how many non-music majors are in DCI corps. IIRC, some corps had a high percentage and some didn't. IOW, DCI ain't entirely made up of music majors. Heh, considering the number of people at try outs you'd figure the market would be overstocked.

The general VIBE of corps, has been that anyone who WANTS to do it, CAN do it. Regardless of their background or skill level. That's what made it cool back then. And what hopefully makes it cool for many years to come. Rather fond memories of a hot chick commenting on what we were doing. How that's so cool, and I wish I could do that. How old are you? Then come on and join us, we have a opening. (and even if we don't, we'll make one)

I can almost guarentee if you took all the corps members of current corps who are not music majors (or do music for a career) most of them would not be able to field a corps (especially in DCA).
