Electronics and changing the creative landscape...

Recommended Posts

Warning: this is not the place to debate the rules change. There's a lot of other threads about that here. Let's keep that debate on the eleventy billion other threads there are.

There are people on both sides of the debate here...but I'll wager there are a few who haven't made up their minds yet.

Now, since we've laid some ground rules...for those people who are versed in show design and using electronics, what, exactly, can you think of that will creatively move the activity forward now that there are new tools to use? How will electronics be used effectively...is the tone color going to be as vital as that of a drum or brass instrument? How can show design in DCI take the "next big step" (a Cadets 83, Star 93) with these tools? Can they? ...and so on.

I think a lot of people on the fence over the next year would welcome a thread filled with examples, thoughts, price points, logistics and so forth. Post sound clips, links to reading materials or whatever else you can find to give people a reference point to work with.

In short, convince folks how to get on board with this, and what you think a corps could do in 2009 to entertain, innovate and create...lets try for some constructive thoughts. :ninja:

Radiohead uses an electronic instrument called an Ondes Martenot.

It produces very mysterious electronic tones that I think would be awesome

Oh and Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater fame plays a continuum.

It's basically the keyboard equivalent of a Fretless guitar.

I think both of those would open up tons of creative possibilities.

Since not everyone may be familiar with said instruments:

There is a brass equivalent of a fretless guitar.

It's called a trombone.

My bassoon teacher took that video of the instrument demonstration. Actually, funny story--he wanted to march contra for SCV the summer after his senior year in HS, but his parents wouldn't let him ended up going to summer music institute and eventually landing a spot in a major orchestra...oh well, choices.
