barigirl78 Posted July 26, 2008 Share Posted July 26, 2008 This is a topic I've been thinking about a lot. First, I'm not sure that there are more fans now than there ever have been. If there are, show me the numbers. Go back 30 years to 1978 and over 40 corps competed in what was then called "Open Class". Over 40!! All summer there were local corps competitions for these 40+ corp to compete in. The finals were broadcast live on a national TV network (PBS) when there was no such thing as "cable" and the broadcast networks could command a large share of audience. There's no doubt in my mind the quality of the corps are better than they were in 1978, but I do wonder what other things have been lost in the process. If I was DCI, I would seriously address the expense of running corps today and institute rule changes that address it.
