byline
I just got my most recent "On Demand" DVD, and on it I ordered what I believe is St. Anthony's Imperiales' last year to compete (1988). I have to say that their 1987 program is one of my all-time favorites, but this one comes pretty close. St. Anthony's is one of the very few guards where my eye is not automatically drawn to one section (typically the rifle line). The writing and performance are so strong in all three sections, and the drill/body movement contribute to this feeling of a show that continually builds, almost without stopping, right till the very end. Subtle, musical, ethereal, elegant, amazing demand and breathtaking presence all combine to make St. Anthony's one of my favorite guards of all time. Hard to believe they never won the gold medal. (I feel the same way about Holley; the timing just never was right for them.) In terms of scholastic guards, I would pick 1986 Union High School. Center Grove was the better guard that year, but I still love the little bird "hops" and other movements that were part of Union's groundbreaking choreography that year. When I watch that show, I still feel like I'm watching a flock of birds in flight, not human beings. The effect is that strong. Your choices?
