But I'm not sure there's a brass judge out there that could pick out a G bugle on sight.

I am a drummer and I can pick out a G on sight.

Would Cathy Rigby be in that dream? (Peter Pan reference inferred from poster.)

Absolutely. Cathy Rigby should be in all dreams.

Really? How? Can you measure the tubing on sight that fast? Detect the more conical design? Because, they were pretty much G trumpets (in multiple sizes) by the time they got to 3V.

Sopranos have WAY more tubing than trumpets, and the new mellophones are much more compact.

Baritones and contras/tubas are harder to discern.

Though, now that I think of it. the real challenege to the judges would be to let them in on it and see if they can judge it on the merits, and not on what it's played on.

That ship has already sailed. A look back at the past decade reveals that judges are capable of judging on merit....but in world-class, they choose not to when confronted with the equipment choices you cite.

They look different, too. But considering the brass judges are all off the field now, do you think they'd pick it out that fast?
