The Plume and Nothing But the Plume

Absolutely true story: Crown's plumes are why I went in to be tested for cataracts, resulting in both eyes being operated on over the past few weeks and a significant improvement in my eyesight. From when I first saw the corps in Annapolis, I thought the plumes were in a V-shape. When I saw them in Atlanta, Allentown and Indianapolis, I still thought that. It was only when I saw the video of Nick, who wore the camera strapped around his torso, that I realized the plumes were of the normal single upright version. I suspect something with that color was playing with my eyes and my brain.

When I saw that video, I knew something was wrong and knowing I had cataracts developing, I made an appointment to be checked by a specialist in Chicago. The result was both cataracts coming off and me receiving implants in both eyes. I cannot believe what I had been missing and I can't wait to witness drill from up high again.

I told Crown's director at the January meeting that his corps was responsible for me learning I had to have something done with the cataracts.

Michael,

After all the stories about drum corps and the state of the activity contributing to the downfall of so many fine folks' mental health, I am delighted to read a story about drum corps playing a part in restoring someone's actual physical health! And during the off season, no less!

Congratulations, and enjoy the shows even more this year!! (And really, those were ugly ### plumes, but I'm so glad to hear they served such a noble purpose!)

Cheers!

Karen

Gonna have to disagree with you there, friend.

If you're referring to the change to shakos.....well I want to say that Blue Stars' shakos and plumes look awesome.

I feel the reason you disagree with the change is because it disrupts the traditional helmet, which is exactly how I felt in 2008 (and still do today). I mean, yes it looks cool and everything, but it's almost like Madison Scouts switching to shakos. Am I right?

In 2003 I spent more than a couple hours at a winter rehearsal camp as part of a cheery and silly assembly line creating plumes for Phantom Regiment. There was, and is, an exact science to those things and I think they look great. It was my first time volunteering for the corps and I had a blast and met some great people. I think about that weekend whenever I see the chickens on the helmets, and smile.

I like SCV's also!

I heard Crossmen are bringing out the red plumes again.

No but really... I love Phantom's feathers. Always have... can't even explain my love for them it is so great.

WHen did phantom add the feathers? I remember in the 70's and early 80's is was just the helmet.

I always loved the plumes the Bridgemen wore in 1980.

Oh wait. That really WAS just a bad dream. My bad.

In regards to the thread, I really hated Crown's plumes this year, although I dig the corps. I always love the plumes on the Cadets.

And a major high five to the Colts, whose uniform just keeps getting better and better.

From someone who marched the candy corn uniforms, Colts uni's are easily the best they've ever been right now.

There is definitely no question that Blue Stars helmet/shako (and uniform) switch was a huge departure from tradition. It can be argued till the ends of the earth whether it was a good move or not, but I think the results these days speak for themselves, and no one can make the argument that it's hindered their success.
