Almost a year ago Youth In The Arts applied to the Malden City Council for a permit to operate a bingo game at the Malden VFW Hall in Malden.

The Licensing Committee of the Council held a hearing on our application that went very well with almost all members voicing support for the organization.

Committee Chairman Neal Anderson tabled the hearing after requesting President John Preziosa to return with the future financial plans of the organization to support the request. The council has not yet voted on the request.

Since that meeting a new council took office on January 1st. The Bingo request has again been referred to the License Committee with two new members. They will take up the matter on March 9th at 6:00 PM in the council chamber on the second floor of city hall.

The resumption of the bingo game is a major part of the corps' financial planning. So if you live in the Malden area and you can make it that night it will be a big help if you show up at that meeting to support our request.

This is a big mistake! Bingo is dying all over the country and corps have learned that it is not a reliable source of financing. Why would anyone try to re-start a corps by relying on this dying business model? Not trying to be nasty or anything, but there are so many people that have been warning about relying on Bingo for your survival.

Some money is better than no money, wouldn't you agree? Maybe it's just one step among others to fix the financial portion of having a strong organization. And who says this is all geared towards fielding a Drum Corps? Maybe they'll start rebuilding their dynasty by fielding a indoor drumline or guard to get operations going. You never know.

Um, he did say bingo would be "part" of their financial planning. Did you catch that little detail?

No, I caught the part where he said "The resumption of the bingo game is a major part of the corps' financial planning". Anyone counting on bingo being a major part of the financial package for the corps' is making a mistake, IMHO. Mr. Bill Cook thought so too.

So what you are saying is dont do bingo to raise money for your group. Is that how I read it? Bingo is not dead and can be a worthwhile enterprise in some areas of the country. Thank you for you for your HO but some of us still run bingo and are able to support our groups quite well. While it is not our main source of income it does supply many things that we would not otherwise be able to have.....plus it keeps our members fees very low.

One of the most successful bingo games in the state is operated by Malden Catholic HS, drawing 675 people on Sunday afternoons. The East Coast bingo is planned for Sunday evenings at the VFW hall only two buildings away. When MC bingo lets out EC will be opening its doors. These two bingos operated this way for 20 years with great success. The hope is for $30,000 a year. There are a half dozen bingos in the area that are still making money.

From my Email:

The city council licensing committe voted favorably on East Coast Jazz' request to operate a bingo game in the VFW hall on Sunday nights. The vote was four to one in favor.

The matter comes up again next Tuesday at 7:00 PM for a vote of the full council. iof all goes well then we will have to go to the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission for tha acrual license.

if you could be at city hall next Tuesday, I will appreceiate a little moral support.

Sincerely,

From the Website:

The Goalsl

The Board Of Directors of Youth In The Arts has been meeting regularly to discuss the future of the East Coast Jazz. At the May meeting the board approved several fund raising projects for this year.

If the organization receives final approval of the bingo game from the State Lottery Commission, we will immediately begin paying off debt and accumulating a fund in preparation for bringing the corps back in the fall of 2011.
