skajerk
Keep the good thoughts and prayers coming! The latest: MONDAY, JULY 12, 2010 4:07 PM, PDHi All, Sorry for the delay, I was having trouble connecting to the hospital's WiFi. Matt has been experiencing a low fever that they have been treating him for since he has undergone sedation. Now it appears that Matt has Strep throat. Those of you who spend a lot of time with Matt know that this is normal for him and he is a carrier and often gets it. Anyway, the Strep maybe the cause of the fever and even those shivers he experienced last night. An infectious disease specialist will be in sometime today to investigate further, run tests, and determine whether or not Matt is becoming more prone to any other infections. We had a worry this morning, but things are sounding pretty stable. Stay positive! We are also finding comfort in the fact that we are hearing this infectious disease specialist is one of the very best!! Also, the medical staff is going to be bringing Matt of off sedation and closer to consciousness again. This time they will begin lowering the sedation at 4am tomorrow morning. This way, when the doctor makes his rounds and sees Matt in the early afternoon tomorrow, he can run tests for Matt while Matt is as close to consciousness as possible. This will also be great, because if Matt does become conscious, it will most likely be during a period of time that Laura and his parents can be there for him. :) I will keep you posted on all of this as much I can, and as often. Matt's vital signs are still strong! I will let you know this evening if there is any news to report. If not, I will make an entry as soon as I have any updates at all. So many of you have been reassuring us of your continued thought and prayer. Thank you so very much, it is not just appreciated, it is impacting and supporting the family's strength as well as Matt's recovery. Thank you also for your words of gratitude towards me personally. Of course I wish I could be connected with all of you under different circumstances, but it is so easy to be of assistance to this wonderful family and a great person like Matt. I am honored to be of service and will continue to be, to the best of my ability. I know there are hundreds of you that would do the same for the Carroll's if distance wasn't an issue. It's amazing to see how many have come together... but that's what Matt does, he brings people together. Matt, Laura, and his family have supported and loved so many of us throughout our lives... We are ALL glad we can be here for them physically, spiritually, or both at this time, in return.
Plan9
In addition to our prayers and best wishes for Matt, his new bride and their families...the DCP community should recognize the quality and commitment of Randy in this effort to support his friend. Having spent so many years in the military, I know what a "brother-in-arms" is all about....Randy is the very definition of a brother-in-arms"! Matt is a fortunate man to have a friend like you. I salute you, Sir! Edited July 13, 2010 by Plan9

I salute you, Sir! Wow! I didn't expect that! I really do appreciate it but you didn't have to say that. I started this just because I feel so utterly helpless living half-way across the country that I'm just trying to do whatever I can to support Matt, Laura and their families. I just hope that people here in DCPland don't get tired of the frequent updates (I know they most likely aren't, it's just the negative side of me creeping in). It just helps me keep my sanity when I post something. Speaking of which, here's the latest: MONDAY, JULY 12, 2010 11:03 PM, CDTHello, Just want to let you know that the Strep Throat has basically been ruled out. They will get another culture in tomorrow, but the Dr. believes he does not have it. That's good news, and I'll keep you posted! Keep Matt in your thoughts tonight and in the morning when you rise, as Matt will be brought [out] of sedation slowly. (see the previous post for those details). Send your positive thoughts and prayers! Edited July 13, 2010 by skajerk
skajerk
The latest: TUESDAY, JULY 13, 2010 5:53 PM, PDTGood evening, Today Matt's sedation was brought down, and the effort was made again to bring him to consciousness. He didn't wake up, but it seemed like he was really trying. He's still very much fighting! He is back on sedation, but not quite as high as he has been. They will begin this process again tomorrow. We have been told that all of this is a very normal process, although long. Every patient reacts differently to the heavy sedation, and it takes each individual different amounts of time to become conscious. They have to keep putting him back under to help him rest after all of the activity and work he is putting into waking up, and to make sure his blood pressure remains under control. While the doctor was trying to help Matt work to consciousness, he told Matt that he should congratulate himself, for his work. It is clear that Matt is working hard, and we took this as a good sign from the Neurosurgeon. In speaking with Matt's father, he thought of a clever way to explain this process to us band/pageantry type people. It's a way to kind of better understand that this is indeed a process, and that Matt is doing a good job. Mike, (Matt's dad) compared the process of trying to wake up Matt as a music or band rehearsal. It is in it's early stages, and the doctor was pleased with with his progress, and knew when Matt had had enough for the day. In Mike's words, "Matt doesn't have the opener down yet", but tomorrow we will keep working. Each day that they work through this process with Matt, it will be like a new rehearsal... Some things to work on, and new material to learn as well. Matt is working with the work ethic we all know and love about him, and we expect to see his progress everyday. We just wanted to share Mike's perspective, and figured you fellow bandos/drum corps people would appreciate it. :) I will keep you posted as it comes, but it will be a slow work in progress. So far, we are to understand that is normal, and we will be patient. Keep praying and sending your love! Let's keep the positive energy flowing for Matty! It just helps me keep my sanity when I post something. It's been my experience that most people who do things "from the heart" are always surprised when others recognize it. It's true humility. That in fact...is the test...and you get an A+ brother!!! Thank you again.
