Why Bother

There is a difference between visiting the site because it's interesting and engaging and visiting the site because you believe it has an actual impact on the world of drum corps.

This idea that DCP is anything more than a place to talk about drum corps is ridiculous and self-righteous. Some people visit because they want to talk about drum corps. Some continue to stay involved because they (mistakenly, IMO) believe that it is a motivator for change. BIG difference.

Anyone who thinks DCP is anything more than a discussion forum needs to check their ego.

It has nothing to do with ego; and I agree that we can take ourselves too seriously; sometimes we do!!! But to say that the G7 was not somewhat surprised, upset, and impacted by the fire that shot through this site would be a falsehood. G7 did not release the Powerpoint proposal to the public but only a PR release; G7 did not represent the actual language that was on that Powerpoint proposal. If it were not for DCP, or blogs like it, the G7 would have been able to hide under their own cover of propaganda. Also, to say that the 19 year old who claimed that he was the ED of a great new start up corps in Indiana was not stopped in his tracks from tarnishing some well meaning people by DCP is also a falsehood. Ego aside, our discussions, our bringing forth items that would otherwise remain unseen, does provide a small service to the good of the whole. So, where is the ego in stating that as a truism?

you may want to check with some folks in DCA and DCI. they do pay attention to what is said here.

want examples? go back and look after DCA finals...theywant feedback. go look after year 1 of Indy...they listened and at times came out here to speak, ask, and listen.

If we were a small niche board in our activity I might agree that DCP has little impact.....but the fact is that we are THE discussion board for the drum corps activity...several corps directors have posted here in the past (Jeff Feidler and Hop for starters) and more read the boardsor hear about it from their members and staff.

Given the G7 directors tendency to go their own way, the impact of DCP readers in changing things cannot be underestimated, because either those directors read the threads, or they got letters from people who read about the proposal on this board.

We just had the same kind of situation in the fencing world. USA Fencing came out with a new logo that was just God Awful...the uproar started on Fencing.net -- THE discussion board for the sport in the US -- resulted in the old logo coming back....something that would not have happened had the board not discussed it.
