Corps Directors

Recommended Posts

I am absolutely, totally, without a doubt, massively sick of everything in our lives being defined on whether or not some certain sex or ethnicity is being "properly" represented. Drum corps is one of the least excluding activity on the planet. With the exceptions of Cavies and Madison, every position is based upon the individual's skills, drive and ambition! I have never heard of a drum corps excluding a female or minority from a teaching or marching position if their abilities are of high quality! (Except for Cavies and Madison being all-male and a few all-female corps). If I were looking for talent to teach my drum corps their would be no exclusion except for talent and excellence!

Stop blaming "the man" in drum corps trying to keep individuals "down" because of race or ethnicity! If a 400 pound gay, black woman from a mormon home in Thailand could hit a quad-high C I believe that BD would be sincerely interested! And if this same individual could teach young trumpets to do the same all corps would hire her in an instant! If she could raise money and create a top-tier corps with her leadership skills she would be a director quickly. In drumcorps, success is everything! :tongue::ph34r:

I agree with all of you; my idea would not work well. That said, my idea is a typical idea that would come down from the top of an organization looking to improve diversity. In fact, the very idea I suggested is employed by thousands of colleges and universities around the country every semester. They raise their prices, and then provide scholarships to those that can't afford it.

Your statement is both flawed and terribly oversimplified.

Tuition increases arent done so that economically disadvantaged kids can have their bills subsidized by rich students.

Scholarships usually come from endowments, not tuition payments.

It happens all the time in the business world. Life is unfair sometimes.

:tongue::ph34r::tongue:

For the last time. This is not the business world. These are private organizations that can not be controlled by outside sources. If they wanted all white males as MM's, instructors, admin and Corps Director, they could do it. Do I want that? No. Do I think they should? No. Do I think any ever will? Absolutely not. Do I think they could? Yes.

DCI does operate with the same principles as the business world, whether you think so or no.

Business principles yes. Rules and laws, no.

This kind of racist bean counting, with the clear implication that there's racism (with zero evidence backing up the accusation) involved in excluding minorities (which is also not happening), is outrageous and incredibly insulting.

Further, no business, school or any other entity is under any obligation to 'seek out' people to fill positions in its organization based on their race, gender or anything else other than their ability to fill the position. In fact, doing so is both illegal and unconstitutional.

Here's an idea, why don't you ask why more minorities/women haven't stepped up and applied for or simply assumed these positions? I assure you, there are no barriers preventing it and they'd be more than welcome.

I've been involved in the activity nearly my whole life, and I've never witnessed a single occassion when anyone was made to feel unwanted on account of their race or gender.
