Spirit of Atlanta 2011

Recommended Posts

The Glassmen beat the Spirit of Atlanta last night, so SOA is currently in 13th place in wc, depending upon where the Colts score. If the Colts beat the Spirit of Atlanta SOA will be in 14th place.

Check that it looks like Spirit is now tied with the Academy for 13th.

Sure,.. and this is like stating the Milwaukee Brewers are tied with the San Francisco Giants because they both have 41 wins. Comparing different scores from different shows where the quality and mix of Corps is different is fraught with difficulty that makes the score comparisons meaningless. The Miwaukee Brewers had the same record as the Boston Red Sox last week. But they are in different divisions. Once the two teams went head to head, we found out who really is better here in June. That said, maybe the Brewers will be better than both the Giants and the Red Sox.. when it counts.... in October. I'm just pointing out the inherent problem of comparing scores from different shows ( and with a different judging panel to boot ).

you are so very correct! unfortunately people have the need to rank the corps. There is only one way to solve this conundrum about rankings though. You have to add up all of the scores and divide by the number of shows the corp has been in. This still sucks as a solution, but it is the best solution to the problem...imho

Michael Del Corso averages corps last 5 shows, but being that we have not yet to have five shows yet...

Ranking the corps is important, because this give us a clue where these corps might end up in this years larger shows, where only the top 12 will go on to finals.

Problem with that line of thought is that it weighs scores with different panels. That's not to say that you can't do it, but it's far more accurate to look at the margins between different corps at various shows when there is no head to head picture available, as is the case right now. As such say corps X and corps Y haven't gone head to head with eachother, but both have competed recently with the Boston Crusaders. Corps X might score a 70 and be .9 behind the Crusaders, while corps Y a day later might have scored a 71 but been 1.4 behind the Crusaders. While they're half a point higher in highest score they're also a half point behind in differential in the matchup vs Boston.

I haven't bothered looking at head to head and relative scores yet anyway as frankly it's way too early and we've seen things change drastically the past few years once judging moves to the full panel.
