Staff turn over

Recommended Posts

Its great to keep your staff, but sometimes change and its effects are beneficial as well. If you never move outside of your comfort zone, then stagnation can set in.

This sounds like Blue Stars. They got great talent, and I'm especially impressed by their percussion last season.

Yet they can't break top 7 even if they marched and played their butts off because of design. I'm hoping Myron's addition to the team will change some of this.

Just look at Fiedler and Rennick. One departed the Cavs and the other PR for SCV. I'm certainly not privy to their personal reasons, but maybe they felt that they had already accomplished everything that they could where they were and it was time to move on to other things. That's been known to happen too. Oooops...I forgot J.D Shaw among others in the activity.

It's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy in many cases, isn't it? BD staff is consistent and consistently good. Of course they are. There aren't many better options once you've arrived.

On the flip side, consistency isn't a virtue in itself. There are corps we need not single out where consistency is as evident as mediocrity.

The primary goal ought not be consistency. The primary goal has to be leadership that's effective. That's the constant that leads to results.

Leaders like Gibbs and Hopkins have been able to build and lead staffs that worked as well as teams. It wasn't so much that those corps were consistent as they were capable of leveraging their individual strengths into group achievement. It's not so much the consistency of the individuals as it is the consistency of the group. The Cadets, for instance, had a visionary program designer for a bold 2005 championship program. But he was gone for the next championship in 2011 which was differently bold and visionary. There were changes in guard and other key positions too. The constant was Hopkins and his leadership which translated into a team capable of design and execution excellence.

It's not about consistency. It's about leadership, which works best when it adapts and changes as necessary.

Just a couple of non changes that seem to be less productive. The Colts have had the team of Greg Orwell, Carla Tomsa and her husband for many years now. During that time the corps has been consistently mediocre spend most if not all their time outside of finals. Perhaps a need for changes there? Glassmen with the duo of Brian Hickman and Sal Salas have been just in or just out of finals forever. Usually when in it is because the Colts are out. Both suffer from shows getting to the field that should have been fixed before they wer taught.

I agree for some the consistancy is good. For others it holds them back.

BigDog #1 is fired by Corps A and hired by equal-strength Corps B.

Fans of Corps A: "We'd gone as far as we could with Big Dog #1. It was time to let him go and bring in someone who could take us to the next level."

Fans of Corps B: "BigDog #1 is a great addition to the staff. He's the guy we need to take us to the next level."

Don'cha just love it?

peace,

Fred O.

Your Colts reference would be accurate EXCEPT that Mr. Orwoll is responsible for running one of the most financially stable corps in all of DCI. And he does so without the pull your Blue Devils or Cadets have competitively. He's not the reason the Colts are placing out of finals. And I'd give your Carla reference credit except that the Colts' guard is consistently a strong caption.

You named two of the LEAST responsible individuals in that organization. For realz.

I agree Greg does a great job as the director from a financial stand point. I believe his ability to hire a staff that will allow the corps to progress competitively is in Question. Carla gets the guard to a moderate level. Usually pretty good early season but the corps including the guard falls off when the big time comes up. I did not analyze the recap but I do not believe the guard has been a top 12 finisher on Thursday or Friday over the past several years. My point is the buck stops at the top. The same applies to Brian Hickman and Sal Salas. Sal is a great guy but the shows lack imagination and things get on the field that should never have gotten off the drawing board.

This is SO true!!! Like when someone expects a guy who delivered a 12th place drum score (or whatever caption) at one place to go to a new team and suddenly.....:They're for real this year!!! Top three!! At least!!!

Happens every October/November....

With Spirit of Atlanta announcing their guard staff for 2012, seems they are going to be one of those very stable staffs for this coming season. Loved what they churned out with this staff last year.
