Michael Boo
I agree it's really satisfying to see those people get this recognition.
kickhaltsforlife
Nice! See, we haven't forgotten about the old timers!!!! Opportunities for some more history lessons over the summer! (Not that they weren't there before, but so many people march and have no clue about DCIs history other than their own corps history in DCI)
CrunchyTenor
Glad to see John Brazale get recognized.
Swine
What about Visual Ensemble and Music Ensemble? These numbers hold the same weight as Visual Performance, etc. Why shouldn't those captions be awarded a trophy? This is a fine article, but I don't really get the "baby steps" here. BOBSMYTH
The DCI trophy will now be called the Founders Trophy and have the names of the original 13 corps added to the base. As a group, that is an incredible list of giants in this activity: Troopers – Casper, WY – Jim Jones Cavaliers – Chicago, IL – Don Warren Vanguard – Santa Clara, CA – Gail Royer Blue Rock – Wilmington, DE – Larry Seeney Madison Scouts – Madison, WI – Bill Howard 27th Lancers – Revere, MA – George Bonfiglio Garfield Cadets - Garfield, NJ – Hugh Mahon Argonne Rebels – Great Bend, KS – Glen Opie Blue Stars – La Crosse, WI – David Kampschroer Anaheim Kingsmen – Anaheim, CA – Don Porter De La Salle Oaklands - Toronto, ONT – John Jones Boston Crusaders – Boston, MA – George Bevilalqua Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights – Newark, NJ – Fred Dooley If you don't know these groups and leaders, I suggest you may want to study up on your history.
Scerpella
Glad to see John Brazale get recognized. It is great to see John recognized but what is unfortunate about the DCI piece is that it doesn't mention John's formative influences in the Spectacle City Mariners, which he marched with as Drum Major (Capn Crunch) and was corps director from 71-74, and the championship Mariners Winterguards he put out at that time before arriving in Rockford in 1976. It is safe to say I think that without the Mariners and even St Gregory the Great Drum Corps where John got his start, there is no John Brazale of the Phantom Regiment. Great to see the Mariners legacy live on (in a small way) through the rededication of this award. Would someone associated with De La Salle back then enlighten me on the difference in responsibilities between John Jones and Bob Cobham? Cobham is widely quoted as being the director who raised his hand at the 1971 DCI planning session when the original name of "Drum Corps National" was introduced. Was he director in 1971 but not 1972? Might he have been an executive director? What does anyone know about this?
