Looking for 3 from the Cadets: 1991, 1995, 1998. Prefer championship week. SOMEBODY has to have them:)

I'm not one to encourage repeats, but I'd like to see a more talented Phantom corps redo the Berlioz. "Spartacus" seemed to work for them. The Cadets could really make "On the Waterfront" work better. And I've always wanted to see another version of Crown's "Stormworks" which first got them into Finals.

In 1984 (1st tick-less year), the corps deemed most effective for the year had a 9th place drumline. Luckily for them, their ensemble was tight. Garfield absolutely WAS rewarded for difficulty that year (and more so in 1985). Sadly, many groups immediately copied what made the Cadets successful, and that didn't work for them.

The Cascades band-ized it in 2002 (heck, it worked for them-- they made Finals). The Cadets did not repeat a note of it in 1990. Candide, Mass, Somewhere, Fancy Free, Recap/Finale.

Meh. In 1985, we also had 7 minutes of "Jeremiah" which is the complete definition of "tough."

Crown is doing something revolving around a super hero. The show builds to Copland's Third and eventually blasts us with "Fanfare For the Common Man."

What were the comparative points to this "innovation?" Where was the State of the Art? The Hornline was _______ than any other corps. ("Louder" is not an answer... see Crossmen 1990) The Drums were _________ than any other corps. The Guard was __________ than any other corps. The drill was __________ than any other corps. The Book was ___________ than any other corps. Madison spent its bank on style rather than substance. Standing O's are fantastic, but there has to be more to a corps in order to win championships. E.g. 1995--certainly one of their most bombastic efforts. Musically, the writing equaled the effectiveness of the program (and face it... they were FAR better than the Cavaliers in Brass Perf. and Repertoire). Visually, it was their typical fourth-rate 1980s drill with an average drumline. 1988 was the exception to their own rule, and they won w/ wonderful design and execution (even though they were MUCH better in Semis). Plus, they had a lot of help from SCV's foul hornline and BD's lifeless visual program. They won by default that year (as did Cadets '90, Cavies '92 and Cavies '01).

I find this odd: Star wins DCI in 1991 for a very good show still considered today to be rather mainstream. It was just the Rich Guys winning that bugged so darned many people (we're seeing the same incessant whining from Occupy, Rape and Steal Wherever the Wind Blows today). So, the next year, the staff tries to warm up to the fans by waving a few American Flags around. "Why won't you love us?" The fans mocked them by roarrrrring their approval for the Cavies. 1993 was indeed the biggest and very best FU ever designed by a drum corps. And if not for the DCI tag ending in the "Dance of Vengeance," they wouldn't have had an applause point. State of the Art? Yes. Did it change drum corps? No. If indeed 1993 was planned to be Star's last year on the football field, what a great way to go out. On THEIR terms. For that, I sincerely applaud them. :)

Please add STAR to 1991. Although Cavies and SCV were announced as co-drum winners, there was a mistake made. Star also scored 19.3. (There was no averaging or anything like that back then.) I voted for SCV 98 for one reason: to knock off Star 1993. That corps seems to carry the same weight as "Citizen Kane" does for the AFI as the best film ever made. It's very good, but is it really the best film??? It's hardly as interesting as other worthy films. Same with Star. I remember 1993 very vividly. Cadets drums were hot and on fire championship week (winning drums on Thurs and Fri). They ticked finals night and lost the trophy. Star was NOT well-received all season. DCI North in Buffalo? Golf claps when they won (decisively). DATR? Cadets finally got them. The crowd was CRAZY! When the Cadets won DCI, the roar from that crowd was off the charts, too. Star's "F.U." to the fans for the screaming and pounding on backs when they fell to 3rd in 1992 (to one of the dirtiest Cadet shows since the 70s) backfired on them, so they took their ball and went home. Hey, thanks for Blast! though. Great stuff! PS: Nothing against Indy. "Roman Festivals" is one of the greatest things I've ever seen on a football field. I just think 1993 is overrated.

What about Visual Ensemble and Music Ensemble? These numbers hold the same weight as Visual Performance, etc. Why shouldn't those captions be awarded a trophy? This is a fine article, but I don't really get the "baby steps" here.

I converted all my VHS to DVD--I am NOT doing it again re BluRay. :p Anyway, I cannot find HIGH CAMERA performances of the Cadets (of B.C.) 1991 and 1998. I need them, or I shall die. Please help!!!

Yes. SCV and Cavies were announced as the winners, but Star also had 19.3. If GE had been a factor, SCV alone would have won, so I don't know how that happened. Looking at that list, weren't the Freelancers just SO friggin' cool that year? :)

How is that fair? They DIDN'T win it. There was no judge; there were no scores given for guard. You cannot arbitrarily decide who wins what.

Ok, you're going to have to provide PROOF that BD won Guard in 1982. My proof is from an end-of-year DCW letter where April Gilligan (then member and later Caption Head) wrote of there being no Guard trophy.

There was no Best Color Guard award in 1982. I distinctly recall April Gilligan's DCW Letter to the Editor discussing that. As for pre-1980, there was that 2 points (not part of the 100 pt scale) where many guards were given 2s. I still don't think there was a separate trophy until 1980. And FWIW, combining numbers with GE marks to arrive at trophies is ridiculous, given there is a separate GE trophy. 1988/1989 is an example as was Spirit being robbed of High Drums in 1980 (Percussion tie w/ Bridgemen but lower GE score).

On which part of the field were you running? Or did you somehow find a better vantage point that DCI judges (since 1972) have been unable to decipher? When a corps sweeps the same caption QF, SF and Finals, it's a pretty good indicator that said corps was superior in that caption. Nobody is arguing brass, perc or GE, are they?

Phantom won Guard. Funny: in the background, you can hear the Best Guard announcement with the camera on the Scouts' guard. When BC says "Phantom Regiment," the guy front/center just opens his mouth in appalled shock. (Madison won guard in prelims)

I think the confusion lies in this: there were announced wins for GE, Brass, Percussion, Guard and Visual Performance. That's fine, but why ignore Visual Ensemble (BD) and Music Ensemble (Cadets)? Are they any less important than the aforementioned? This wasn't live PBS with a time limit. I remember 1985 when they announced captions before scores. Visual and Guard to SCV and Drums to BD. Cadets 3peated, but their caption awards weren't announced until after. Was that supposed to be "suspense?" (After PBS cut out, they snatched the Guard trophy from SCV and gave it to Spirit. Oops!)

1986 Best Color Guard. Devils somehow won... right on camera in about the 2nd or 3rd minute, a girl dropped her flag... it was sadly comical watching her try to recover. I guess it only matters sometimes.

When does DCI decide appearance order?

"Variety?" Really? I'm not talking about velocity. BD's "staging" (whatever the hell license THAT is) isn't interesting. Nor is their battery placement. Even their color guard isn't as entertaining as some (check out the mid 80's Spirit guards for entertainment value as well as amazing talent).
