I don't know if the scouts still do this. But, when I aged out in the mid 80s we got to keep our hat, gauntlets, citation chords and ties.

British West Africa is a bit of an anachronism. Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone and The Gambia have been independent since the early 1960s. How did the Blue Stars come to use such funky coins?

If I remember the story correctly, on a free day the DM at the time saw a ton of the coins at a shop, and bought them all. The coins that get handed out today are from the same 'roll' that was first bought.
