VISITING THE U.S. NAVAL ACADEMY

To visit USNA, you'll just need a valid ID (such as a driver's license). Vehicles without DoD stickers cannot park on the Academy grounds, unless you have a handicap placard. There is a pedestrian entrance very close to City Dock, so the best thing to do would be to park on City Dock or the Gorman St. parking garage, and then walk the 2 blocks to USNA Gate 1. There is more info about visiting USNA here... "http://www.usna.edu/visit.htm"

Other things to see while at USNA...

- USNA Visitors Center just inside Gate 1

- The USNA Chapel and John Paul Jones' crypt

- the Preble Hall museum and the model ship collections <----- the model ships are INCREDIBLE!!!

- the new War of 1812 exhibit in Preble Hall

- the Rotunda and Memorial Hall inside Bancroft Hall

There is a cafeteria-style restaurant in Dahlgren Hall that serves great sandwiches, salads, and pizza.

Hope that helps!

Jeff

Everyone will sell themselves short if they don't go to the city dock area while they are in town. And tour the Naval Academy. I think anyone can still walk onto The Yard (USNA campus)and check it out, right Jeff? And you can still visit the crypt of John Paul Jones I believe. All stuff you should see.

Don't go to D.C. or Baltimore, start in Annapolis right there downtown. If you finish with Annapolis, then head to D.C. or Baltimore.

Good points, David. There is a lot to do in Annapolis, between the Naval Academy, the shops, restaurants and pubs at City Dock and on West Street, the Maryland Statehouse complex and the historic state capitol building, and the wonderful historic homes in the city.

Plus the Chesapeake Bay a short drive away... scenic Kent Island on the Eastern Shore side of the Bay Bridge.... and so forth.

For anyone staying in the area for a few days either before or after the championship weekend, I would highly recommend a "getaway drive" to the Eastern Shore town of St. Michaels, about an hour from Annapolis. My wife Barbara grew up in that town... and she and I went there often to visit her mom and dad. It's a great spot for shopping, dining and sightseeing.

when dci was in college pk, stayed in jessup. on a free day, tried to sightsee the coast/shore/waterfront southward. spent 30-40 miles (before GPS) looking for maybe a small town/fishing town on the shore. couldn't get NEAR the water for all the gated communities. hope for better luck this time

Thanks Jeff as I'm covered both ways.... (DoD and HC placard).

Is a DoD ID badge needed or just the DoD vehicle sticker?

And just pull up to the gate or do you need to sign in anywhere? LOL, have been on plenty of working Navy Bases, first time at the Academy.

Edit: Are cameras allowed on Academy grounds?

If you have DoD stickers, you would also need to present a DoD ID card to the sentry. Just pull up to any gate. You can park in any space that has a small triangle painted in front of it. If the space has any lettering painted on it, it's reserved for someone/something.

Cameras are fine on the Academy. It is a VERY photogenic place this time of year, too.

ONE WEEK!!!!

Thanks Jeff, thought needing a badge was mentioned in a post a few months back. Adding "badge" to packing list, also note that "Triangles are good".

In typical navy parlance, Jeff's parking spot would say something like...

CIVDIR-USNAVDRUMBUGCRPS.

Whatever you do, DON'T PARK THERE.
