Ghost
Beckham makes a good point, too, about the annoyance factor for the audience. Reminds me of the cries to use a blimp. Ever been around an event with a blimp? They are loud and distracting. Not the kind of thing you want overhead as SCV's lone mellophone is playing "Bring Him Home." Good point yes, but since your team and shots desired are pretty dialed in by semi's, Garfield's drone idea might work. Pick either semi's or finals to use the drone and the DVD high angle option would come from the other night with no drone in the picture. If there's a malfunction during the one night of drone use, oh well, some corps don't get that option or try again next year. burgerbob
Why does everyone want close ups? Personally, I don't like them unless it's wanted in the show design, like a soloist (guard or whatever). Otherwise, the show is designed to look good from the stands, not from above or right up close. Plus, then you see more people hiding behind props or costume changes, etc. Edited September 22, 2013 by burgerbob

corpsband
You're thinking inside the box, corpsband. ok -- forget acoustic performance entirely. record the audio track in an empty outdoor stadium with an isomike. record the video track with all the noisy tech. dub in the audience. mix well. serve chilled with an olive. How about recording live audio and mix it at the iPad source? Lightly shaken with whole cubes and served in a chilled glass with two, big olives. Still need as quiet a rotor as possible to minimize acoustic noise heard by the MM's. Edited September 22, 2013 by garfield

For this application you'd probably want an octo-copter (we're recording in hi-def now) to carry a good enough camera. I agree that you could get some incredible shots. But the noise level -- even with the most expensive, quietest tech --- would be...absurd. Until we get that anti-grav tech all sorted out, the idea of a quiet hover will be restricted to balloons. Unfortunately balloons are at the mercy of the wind (and yes -- there's wind in the Oil Can). You could push the balloon around -- with some of those really noisy props off your octo-copter Edited September 23, 2013 by corpsband
Ghost
Because of the mm movements and extra camera person on the field is out. If the stadium has overhead catwalks, that's a possibility since using a large crane and bucket would look out of place.
