N.E. Brigand
I introduced eight artistically-minded friends to drum corps this year by buying them tickets to join me at the Massillon competition. If at all possible, taking people to live shows (of, say, six to eight corps, not a long show like a regional) is probably the best way to make that introduction. If that wasn't an option, I think I'd want them to see video not of whole shows but of single songs, preferably of music they recognize. Short and sweet, and preferably selections that emphasized the power and athleticism involved. It would depend on the person's tastes, though.
How_Will_It_End?
I was actually faced with this dilemma just the other day, and I settled on this one:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KtLXFGnYEs
wallace
LOVE that show. Drumline was doing some work! But if you want to wow someone who isn't hip to drum corps, something from that era might now quite get it done with how marching has evolved (not counting dance, etc. MARCHING-marching really didn't start to look good through most of the top 12 until the mid-00s). How about the Cavaliers "Roaring 2000s" video? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJE3jw0DE08 Highlights from 2000-2008. If this doesn't blow minds, I don't know what will. Yeah, probably for a look at modern drum corps that would probably serve better. I just like that period of the Cavaliers. Brubaker and Zingali gave master classes on drill practically every year with their respective corps, and I consider 86-92 as the period of visual development that defined the modern Cavaliers. Some of Brubaker's drill sequences were breathtaking, and the guard was...well, there are no words to adequately describe them. drumcorpsfever
Since I'm not seeing any representation on here, I'll throw in a couple of my favorite Bluecoats brass moments: Creep from 2011 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyzzG5MTMyM The Boxer from 2008 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYXIRuXlSRY Here's the other Creep clip that must be included. By the way, almost 1/2 million views between these 2! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0_EA3UcGNM Edited October 24, 2013 by drumcorpsfever
