E. Providence Review

edit: Don't know why you removed your review but I'll leave this up because I spent all that time writing the reply :P

Maybe it's the week off from competition but I feel the need to speak my mind.

"First thier Brass...Loud and impressive all though they dont have a caption for loudest corp."

Correct. There is no caption for that....but you didn't see anyone complaining when Renegades came over last year with 73(?) horns and blew the house down. I think the slogan is...Loud is Good?

"In music there is something called dynamics and to me the Brigs dont have them. They put out 70horns for the 5th year in a row and they just try to blow you away."

That was a joke right? Their horn line is at a whole other level and to say they don't play with dynamics is a little out there. I've seen/heard them multiple times this year btw.

"Next ill move to the guard they were good and clean however i dont know what campbells soup and Marilyn Monroe have to do with the Tommy."

"(im not sure which one i wasnt paying much attention to the anouncer, he was no Fran Herring)"

Maybe you should listen to the announcer...the show is called Pop Art.

"And finally thier visual show...WOW thier clean but i guess its easy to be that clean when you have 35 drill pages. Simplicity has one them 4 straight titles..."

35 Sets? Your joking again right? This isn't a marching band. A bit of an exageration I would think. The drill writer for Brigs writes for my marching band and we have at least 40-50 sets there each year. Also, I'll be ###### if you can call the drill from these last couple years simple. It may look easy if it's done at such a high level *shrugs*

"Im sorry but having this show win is not good for DCA if thier going to progress then they need to cut out the shows where the biggest corps win because honestly its quality over quantity."

You say the hornline "Loud and impressive"....the guard was "good and clean"....and the visual..."WOW thier clean". It sound as if they had a quality corps by YOUR words. How is that bad for DCA?

I'm just sick of seeing people with a chip on their shoulder talk very highly of other corps and speak soo critically of Brigs no matter how good they may be. I find it hard to swallow how Brigs could have so much wrong with their show but everyone else you spoke greatly of with no comments on how they could improve their shows respectively. Maybe that does rub me the wrong way :P

About the perc score, Brigs did deserve to win it.

They are not in your face like the cabs drumline is but much more refined and clean, and they still have room for improvment.

They have a very addvance perc book much more like a DCI line lots of variety etc...

As far as the rest of the corps goes I do not think that Brigs is Very clean especially the brass line, lots of over playing, stick outs bad releases, they have room for improvment there too.

I do apreciate what the Cabs are doing tho, trying to become a litle bit more "up to date" at the same time as preserving traditions.

I really enjoyed your review of the show EXCEPT for when I got to your explanation of the Cabs which I agree with, BUT I think your going a little bit off the deep end with the Brigs. I have been to all their championship performances and they deserve to win each time. They have set the bar very high just like Bushwackers of the 90's did. In my opinion, when you write a review, it's ok to be critical but when it sounds like you march with the Cabs, that's not good. Hey, nothing wrong with being clean. Who cares if you are running around for 11 minutes, or if your forms are simple BUT crystal clean? I personally would rather see the latter. I am a big fan of Cabs, and in my opinion I hope they win IF THEY DERSERVE TO! I will be the first to stand up and cheer them if they beat Brigs. I am NOT a fan of the Cabs musical selections each year beacuse how many times can you do a Latin show? Rump-chump is cool for DCA because it gets the older alumni and older fans to stand up and cheer, BUT times move forward and hearing them play it NO MATTER WHERE THEY PUT IT IN THE SHOW, is to me boring, same ole same ole just a different year. Where as Brigs play a different show every year, always pushing the envelope. Look at most of the drumlines in DCI.......when you watch them warm-up, they blow you away, but when it comes to the BOOK, dirt simple most of the time. I marched senior corps for 14 years and we were in smaller drumlines that played more than the bigger corps, but never got the credit for it. In the judges mind they just want to hear a clean balanced line. If you play the hard stuff and its clean, great, but don't chide Brigs for having a "simple" drum book(in your opinion). I think most people would like to see Cabs win this year for a number of reasons. I know You will not agree with me saying this, BUT I know DCA enough to know that if the 2 corps are even they will most likely give it to the cabs.....what better front page story on the cover of Drum corps World..."Cabelleros defeat Brigs to win their 9th title, Jimmy Russo retries on TOP!" That is a great story. politics may become involved. Jimmy has been a great ambassador for drum corps for like 35 years. I think he is GREAT at what he does, and DCA will surly miss him. I think finals will be jam packed to see if Jimmy can lead his corps to the title in his retirement year. I'm excitied to see what will transpire at finals. I hope that the best corps wins for what they do on the field and not politically swayed. Sorry i am rambling and Ive kinda got off the topic. Bottom line, when you write a review, try to remain un-biased as possible.

Based on your post, I guess the Cabs should just break up since they are locked into Latin music and cannot be original.

Tired of the Rumps? I guess Skyliners should scrap their ties to the past with their sounds from Broadway. Boston Crusaders should stop using Conquest as their signature. The Hurricanes should stop using the Magnificent 7.

What's wrong with tradition? The problem with drum corps today is there is a lack of appreciation of the past and that is DCI based and spreading through drum corps.

I guess if you had your way, the alumni corps should all go away because they play old, boring music.

Jimmy Russo announced his retirement so now the Cabs will win based on sentimentality. Give me a break!

What corps are you affiliated with?

Steve, nothing wrong with tradition :)

And, contrary to what Steve said, the alumni corps or the DCA corps aren't the ONLY "keepers" of drum corps tradition. Each corps, whether junior, senior, or alumni, have their own traditions which are held dear.

Being repetitive isn't keeping and maintaining tradition! Maybe nostalgia, but not tradition.
