the DCI Yearlys: 1985

Three words: "A Florida Suite"

That we didn't win brass that year was simply criminal.

You got that right, you guys kicked... we toured off and on with Suncoast and it was always great to hear Florida Suite in the distance.

Here's a little of what I remember from the '85 Season:

Walking into a little school in Bloomington and sitting in the first "all corps" meeting in front of one of the best staffs ever assembled.

Playing on a brand new K-90, fresh out of the shrink wrap.

George Zingali wearing a long Minnie Mouse Sweatshirt, belted like a dress with leg warmers.

Trying on my pink for the first time.

Marching my 2nd Indy 500 parade in 3 years with a brand new corps.

Taking high brass at our debut show.

"Mr. Cow has no nose!" :P

The birth of Harvey, the Big Bad Wolf.

Reading about our adventures in "Trivial Ed's" column.

"The Spirit"

"The friggin' 14"

4th of July at Epcot!

The final 52 Counts!!

Not making finals at Allentown, hearing "The Mouse is Dead!"

Personally being escorted out of the Atlanta Zoo

Not being able to see the stands due to the downpour at DCI South!

Not being able to hear the battery due to the crowd in Bloomington!

Suncoast staffers telling us "If finals would've been in Bloomington last week, you guys would be champions by now!"

Not remembering anything but marching on and off at Semifinals.

The announcement that we had made finals, literally running into Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant when I went to use the payphone. "Sorry Little Hulkster!"

Leaving it all on the field.

The long ride home.

Hey all,

thanks for the Les Eclipses pics - if you'll notice, the one that Sam put up is with our new uniform (2nd tour). The one with us at retreat is with the old uniform (and notice we have maybe 25-30 horns and 20 guard tops). First tour was a tad rough

I loved Vanguard's guard that season, and thought the Blue Devils show was one of the most underated ever - that baritone solo was incredible. The whole show was incredible!!!!

That was also the year that I decided that no matter what - I would march Cavaliers one day.

Later,

Mike

Must....gouge out...mind's...eye!!!

Awright, Spanky....story time!  I have a feeling I'll like these!

Here ya go, Sam:

"Mr. Cow" and "The Spirit" both came from Dave Tippett. Mr. Cow was a puppet that had been made from a milk carton at a school we stayed in in Whitewater. Dave was, shall we say, a little intoxicated when we checked in at 2:00am and kept busting into the gym with the puppet and saying "Oh no! Mr. Cow has no nose!" in this falsetto voice :P It took several staffers to get him to go to bed.

The "spirit" was what he used to describe playing with energy and positive feelings so that there was "no baggage" in your sound.

The "friggin' 14" was the volume level (on a 10 scale) that John Simpson wanted out of the contra hit in the "Wish Intro"

Harvey was originally Donald Duck at the January camp. We went to the IU field house and George played with the idea of the show being animated throughout. Donald was going to walk across the field with a fishing pole, catch a fish, etc. We never heard anything else of it. Then, mid-first tour, George shows up in Wisconsin with the subsets to make "Harvey" walk instead of us just floating him across the field. After a few tense pass-throughs and an afternoon of practice, (with George on top of the equipment truck and several guys in Scouts jackets watching) Harvey was alive!

Tip to zoo officials: If you feed 128 adolescents after they perform a standstill, don't give them all the bananas they can carry and let them out in the PRIMATE BUILDING! A few of us were escorted out after realizing that the chimps and the 500 pound silverback gorilla wanted to share our bananas. I think that they had to tranquilize the gorilla because he shook the bars and got very hyper. :(

Epcot was a free day for us. After the morning parade, we had a chance to connect with Disney and realize what our show was really all about.

Whenever we were sluggish in the morning (usually after pancakes), the visual staff would have us set up for the last 52 counts (from the mello hold in the "Wish Reprise" to the end of the show) to get us going. It was something that we all looked forward to in practice because we knew that when we hit the last 52, we were going to do a runthrough next. That last move was just so d@mn much fun to march, it was a great Zingali drill pull and the arrangement was full bore.

At finals retreat, there was a female contra in VK that was a little tipsy. When Brandt Crocker got ready to announce scores, she said. "IF Star beats us, I'm going to puke!" We did and so did she. It was pretty funny until the wind picked up.

OH well...I remember being ###### about the first uniform change even though Red is my color. :) I didn't like it. They had changed the plaid to black and white checkered sashes with the red jacket.. :sshh:

The 27th Lancers horn line improved since 1984 that's for sure. The drill wasn't all that hot for one thing and we didn't really have a big staff. Most of them were former 27th Lancers. Marc Sylvester wrote the drill and it the music was odd too. We did a "forwards and backwards" show as it was pegged. "Seahawk" , I always wanted to play and we did...but we did stuff from "Dreamgirls". I loved the "When I first saw you" arrangement, but didn' t like the "And I am telling you" version. (Was that what it was?).. :) I remember Les Eclipse beating us at a show and thinking 'Uh-oh'...But I was concerned about this "Star of Indiana". Our love/hate relationship began! :) They took Zingali from us... :P (I'm glad we got him back in 86). I remember him showing up though on some occasions that year...

I remember that we were struggling because we really didn't have many instructors we were pretty much on our own except for a few...Charley Poole, Tom Lizotte, Kevin Kernan, Bill Solari, John Bodie, and I can't even remember who arranged our music that year. If it hadn't been for the Out of staters they probably wouldn't have been able to go out on tour that year....It was half Memphis Blues/Defenders/Pride of Cinn and a hodge podge of others.. :)

The first year that we fell out of finals, by mere tenths of a point...That sucked... :( I have good and bad memories, but I thank God for the alumni that helped us..I remember hearing countless stories, "Back in 80 when we waz the bawls"...and many breakdowns...

But I got my dream, I got to march with the 27th Lancers and I got to play "Seahawk" and "Danny Boy", what more in life could a Lancer ask for? :)

OH and did I mention the Love/Hate relationship with Star? :) :sshh:

Was Eric Reasoner there in 85 or just for 86?

BTW, I would have loved to have played Seahawk and Danny Boy with you guys.

The most bittersweet moment for me was that 27 wasn't there finals night. 1980 Lancers was one of the shows that made me want to march. We've talked about it before, but it was still somewhat hollow for me personally.

Love you, too, Stephanie!

That's who it was Eric Reasoner I believe you're right about that but he was there for 85! Thanks LL, and btw Frank Dorritie arranged our music in 1986. Beautiful arranger, wonderful teacher and great human being!
