The Anti-Narration BD Thread

Recommended Posts

It sounds as if you are "labelling" parents in general.

I guess what is good for the "labelling" goose is not good for the "labelling" gander.

Nice try, I am not labeling anyone but questioning those who allow this behavior in the activity to continue. There is a big difference. What I am saying is what I was taught in drum corps and the poster Michael was the one who responded to me saying that it is more of "adults" doing the labeling.

No I'm not labeling parents, but ASKING what is drum corps teaching today. When I marched we were taught to RESPECT each others opinions whether we agreed with them or not. I asked, where that philosphy has gone. I didn't pinpoint "parents".

Ooooooooo, I hate those, those, those........labelers. All they do is label. There should be no labels. You labelers should be ashamed of yourselves. I am never hanging out with a labeler. :sshh: :worthy: :P b**bs

Give me some time, I will find those three, I guarantee you...It is the kids and YES the adults are guilty so that's why I asked, what the ADULTS are TEACHING the kids today. It is both off them and I'm still sick of it. <**>

Okay, Stephanie, I'll wait. In the meantime, I'll leave you with a favorite quote from one of my heros, Colin Powell: "Avoid having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it."

Respectfully,

Michael

Michael, with all due respect and I do respect you because of our past affiliations with certain people, what are you trying to imply to me? That I have an ego of some sort because I am calling like it is? :P :) There is a difference between having an ego and having common sense, and what I am observing what is going on, is merely common sense to me.

I have already found one thread alone to back my claim.. :worthy:

Remember that "Frustrated, angry upset" thread? All you have to do is go read that one, the labelers are all there, YOUNG AND OLD alike! :P

David,

By calling them "labelers," aren't you, in turn, labeling?

:P

I personally like the changes that are happening in show design over the past years. Could you image if DCI truly stayed "traditional". I personally would hate to watch drumlines mowing the 50, symetrical drill, no existing pit percussion, marching tympani lines, and color guards that had to put there flags some harness type thing.

DCI was once looked at by marching bands as the innovators of this activity. If we keep bashing corps for pushing the envelope then corps will be looking to high school marching bands for what is innovative.

I am in favor of amplification and if a corps wants to do narration then go ahead and do it. DCI will not lose fans over this. The truth is this, most high school programs that feed these corps with their members come from high school programs that use amplification and sometimes narration.

When I was in corps in the late 80's early 90's I was a tympani player. Do you think I would have rather been "traditional" and been in a marching tympani line? The answer would be HECK NO!!!!!!

These younger people do not see amplification as a problem and neither will corps members 5 or 10 years from now. These current members will be the future fans. The true "traditionalists" that are against amplification will eventually become out numbered by those who see amplification as the norm and the anti-amplification people will turn into the DCI dinosuars.

These kids that are performing now with amplification are working their butts off so people like us can be entertained. What sucks the most about that is that they are doing what is normal for them because they have been do this in their high school programs. Stop bashing on what is now the norm for these kids.

Get over it and except change. If I see another anti-amplification petition at DCI finals in Boston I will start a pro-amplification petition.

Here is an idea. Lets get the lists of all of the people who sign the anti-amplification petition and give them a special DCI 2005 Championships "traditionalist" audio package. Since they are so against change when they order the DVD's and CD's they will get the exclusive "traditionalist" package of LP (which can only fit 4 corps on it) and a BETA video.

Stephanie, with the same respect I offer that you may or may not be "calling it like it is." More accurately, you are calling it like you see it, through the filter of your personal bias - which all of us have to one degree or another. That filtered view is not neccessarily "like it is", but rather, how we see it.

Nonetheless, I respect your passion and your opinion and will defend your right to offer it for consideration by all. Our opinions are neither right or wrong - good or bad - they are simply informative of the stance of the offerer - in other words - they are what they are - nothing more - nothing less. (and that's simply my opinion - nothing more - nothing less)

Here's the difference between The Cadets narration and The Blue Devils narration.

Cadets- Start their marching warm up, whistling the Kill Bill "Twisted Nerve"theme. The guy in the pit gives an augmented Rod sterling impersonation " You have entered a world of sight and sound" etc... This happens during the warm up. It lasts about 20 seconds.

The Devils- Guy in the pit doing a impersonation of a 1920's dance marathon anouncer. His narration starts at the begining of the show(Yowza! Yowza! Yowza 500 hours! and counting!) and through out the whole show in spots to the end.

If you want to be fair. No, If you want to be right. The Blue Devils, By Far Have the most narration. It fits the show. But so does the Cadets and it's done during the warm up.

I love my Devils. but, You got to give The Cadets their due. Their narration is in the perfect place(during the warm up) if you have to do it.

At first we can't understand The Cadets. They add narration. Oh, The Cadets have narration now!

The waters too hot! The waters too cold! The waters too wet! rag, rag, rag, rag, rag. :)

It doesn't matter anyway, Devils are going to win the championship! :worthy:

Some of us don't mind the amps so much, as the narration. So, hypothetically speaking, say I signed the anti-amp petition....doesn't mean I'm a 'traditionalist'. I love the direction corps have gone, for the most part. So, would there be a 'middle of the road' package available for me? :P
