Guelph Royalaires are back as an alumni corps

Recommended Posts

You rock Larry,

Great to have seen you again in action after all these years.

I am currently with Royalaires and hoping to put some of the tunes together with the greats of them.

We practice Wednesday nights and I know that is a little far for you to travel but you can stay at my house any time. Just like the time at "Wyatt's" house. But since this is the internet and people read this I will close by this.

Hope to see anyone Royalaire connected or other soon.

Guelph Royalaires are in our fourth week as of this past Wednesday. Things are going great and each week we are getting 1 or 2 new faces, and we are improving in size and quality every week. At this points we are working on Christmas music for our upcoming christmas parades.

Anyone in the area that is interested in coming out we practice every Wednesday in Guelph Ontario at the 11th Regiment where the corps was originally founded. More info coming soon...............

Cheers! :)

Letter #1 from Guelph Royalaires president:

Thank you, one-and-all, for the renewed interest and encouragement you

have offered the Corps Executive. You have reinforced our vision and

efforts to return the Guelph Royalaires to the respected, crowd-pleasing

Corps of the past.

The NEW Waterloo Band Festival: On Saturday, August 20th, the Royalaires

Alumni hosted the revival of this once famous show of the ‘50’s and

‘60’s. Proceeds from the event supported the Juno Beach Centre

Veterans’ Memorial Brick Program. What a time for the return of the

Festival during 2005, the “Year of the Veteran”. Nostalgia flowed as

the rebirth of the Festival complement our tribute to Canadian Veterans,

and the revival of the Royalaires Alumni. In excess of 3 000 fans

returned to University Stadium, formerly Seagram Stadium, where many of

the fans and performers alike performed so many years ago with our

respective corps. What a great feeling for us all!

As a result of the success of this event, a number of very positive

outcomes were realized. First, $35 000.00+ was raised to remember

Canadians who gave their lives while serving Canada during the Second

World War. Secondly, we have already begun plans to stage the Festival

on August 19, 2006, so circle this date on your calendar and tell your

friends all about it. Finally, the name of the Royalaires Alumni is

back on people’s lips and in the public eye. The success of staging

this event is a monumental step in the Corps’ revival and holds nothing

but a bright future for us. Thank you, everyone, for supporting the NEW

Waterloo Band Festival.

Our New Rehearsal Home: We are pleased to announce that our “new” home

for rehearsal is the Guelph Armoury on Wyndham Street, South in downtown

Guelph. This location takes the Royalaires Alumni back to our roots in

the 11th Field Regiment (Royal Canadian Artillery). What an appropriate

home for us to begin anew! Our rehearsal schedule begins in September.

Rehearsal Schedule: Below is our WEDNESDAY NIGHT rehearsal schedule

through to January 2006. Time 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm.

September 14, 21, 28 October 5, 12, 19, 26 November 2, 9,

16, 23, 30 December 7, 14, 21

ROYALAIRES ALUMNI WEB SITE: We are in the process of having our newly

constructed web site up and running in the near future. This vehicle

will be another key element to enlist new members and to keep the public

informed of our latest news, events, performances, and growth. Stay

tuned for more progress reports in this area.

ROYALAIRES ALUMNI EXECUTIVE: The Royalaires Alumni is pleased to have

gathered a group of like-minded Alumni to form the new Executive. In

addition to being good friends, we share a common vision for the future

of the Corps and are committed to this task. As we begin our comeback,

we are very pleased, but not surprised, at the number of Alumni from

across Ontario who have expressed their support for, not only our

efforts, but also their interest in joining us to rebuild the Corps.

Director - Ed Finoro (519) 669-1817 (edfinoro@hotmail.com)

FIRST REHEARSAL/MEETING: At our first rehearsal on Wednesday, September

14th at the Guelph Armoury, we shall gather/socialize from 7:00 to 7:30

pm. Following this, we shall have a brief meeting/discussion about our

plans and vision for the Corps. Attendance will help us determine our

membership and equipment needs. A music rehearsal will follow to help

get us “back in shape”. We look forward to the renewed camaraderie and

fun of Alumni Drum Corps and we invite you all to become part of it!

For more information about the Royalaires Alumni, please contact any

member of the Executive by telephone or email.

WORDS OF THANKS: Returning briefly to the Opening Ceremonies of the

NEW Waterloo Band Festival... The Royalaires Alumni was represented on

the field by a National Colour Party comprised of five members of the

Corps. Our thanks go to Peter Beaman, Gerry Cooper, Jim Lawrence, Jim

Russell, and Terry Sikkes for representing the Corps so well.

For those in attendance, you certainly noted how smoothly the show ran

from start to finish. This is a credit to Paul Hallman who returned to

the Corps serving as Field Coordinator for the show. Paul’s experience

and command on the field were again clearly evident with great results.

Paul’s efforts were complemented by our PA Announcer, Mike Farwell, News

Director of 91.5 The Beat in Kitchener. Not only was this the first

show of its kind that Mike attended but also the first opportunity to

act as Announcer. Mike’s professionalism and experience behind the Mike

were tremendous assets for this event. Well done, Mike!

Corps Director, Al Strassburger was busy all day preparing and posting

parking signs and coordinating volunteers for program sales and ushers.

Again, experience and leadership contributed to a well run program.

Great job, Al!

Ron Asselstine was “recruited” at the last minute to help with program

sales along with Brian Dobson, Mandy (Granger) and Andrew Orphanos,

Marion Brown, and Peter Webb. Ron also collected program sales $’s for

safe keeping throughout the night.

SEEN ON SCENE AT THE BAND FEST: Several former members of the Royalaires

were seen chatting it up with fellow corps alumni throughout the night.

Rick Robida marched with Opti Corps and was reunited with Ron Asselstine

both of whom played contra together in the ‘60’s. Although I didn’t see

him, Joe Washkurak was in attendance along with Nelly Bell now living in

Sauble Beach, Tom Mills (‘60’s cymbals), Al Galbraith, Gary Petker (late

60’s Sop I), Danny Young (‘60’s Contra), Pat McMahon (‘60’s Bari), Mike

Gordon (‘60’s Sop) and Bill Graham and Gerry Tremblay who marched for

most of the 20th Century with the Royalaires and others.

This is not a complete list of Alumni, so if you saw any others there or

you were there, please let us know.

FINAL “NOTE”: Please forward this email to other Royalaires Alumni

you know of and copy us so we can have their email addresses to expand

our mailing list. Hope to see you on Wednesday, September 14 at the

Guelph Armoury for our first rehearsal an Corps Meeting.

Best personal regards,

Bill

Letter #2 from the president of Guelph Royalaires

OCTOBER

Since our last newsletter, the Royalaires Alumni has indeed been

“marching forward”. While it is still early in the rehearsal or

“off-season”, we have had new members join in each of our four

rehearsals held thus far. We anticipate that this trend will continue -

building our ranks, individual skills, and overall Corps development

each week.

October/November Rehearsal Dates: The Corps will rehearse at the

Guelph Armoury each Wednesday in October/November. Specific dates are:

October 12, 19, & 26 November 2, 9, 16, 23, & 30

We begin at 7:00 pm with distribution of equipment and personal warm-ups

with formal rehearsal from 7:30 – 9:30 pm. Upon commencement of

ensemble playing with both brass and percussion sections, this time will

be extended to 10:00 pm.

Membership Targets: The Royalaires Alumni has established membership

targets for each of its sections. These are:

Brass: 42 Percussion: 16 Colour Guard: 12

Currently, we have achieved 35% (15) of our brass target and 44 % (7) of

our percussion target. By November 1st, we hope to have raised our

numbers by 10 % in each of these sections at to top the 50 % mark by

December 1st. While these figures are modest at this time, we are

strengthened by the consistency of good attendance of current members

and new recruits and improvements in musicianship each week.

Anyone remotely interested in investigating membership with the

Royalaires Alumni is cordially invited to attend any of our upcoming

rehearsals.

Best personal regards,

Bill
