Uniformman518
Why is it that a corps such as the Blue Devils can make it to finals almost every year in comparison to a corps such as Crossmen when the kind of come in go between semifinals and finals when each of them work just as hard as the other. Just curious.
nummy1
Corps such as the Blue Devils and Cadets attract the best young musicians.. and lots of them... Since they have been on the top for so long, they are able to be pickey and only take the best... Corps such as the Crossmen, are a little more stuck with what they get, a lot of younger musicians, more high school aged than anything... So with that, they aren't able to do as much, even if they work as hard...
bishtom
I think the longevity of quality staff may also have something to do with it...but there are several factors
perc2100
1. Consistent, top quality staff 2. Consistent top quality show design 3. WAY larger talent pool to choose from 4. WAY larger budget available to them 5. better equipment (in some cases) 6. more 'community' respect (i.e. a judge might be more willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, while other corps have to be twice as good as their competitors to move up) Just a few thoughts... -- doug
BeachDrums
Yeah, I agree with the other posts. Blue Devils tend to have older (19, 20, 21) members who have more experience and are generally more skilled in their area of performance. Quality, experienced and loyal staff helps a great deal. Blue Devils have that. You're right, though, all corps work their tails off all summer long, but not all corps have mostly older members, highly experienced instructors, and a reputation of winning. That winning history attracts highly talented staff and members. And the beat goes on. B) Edited December 5, 2005 by GuitarMan
bd5times
During my time in drum corps (Blue Devils), the staff used to tell us in January that at that point in time, every drum corps was the same. No worse, no better. It's the corps that improves the most up until DCI the becomes the DCI Champions. I realize that's rhetoric and something that was used to inspire us, but in a sense, it's true. It's a race to see who can impove the most coupled with the killer show design.

glory
The top corps benefit twice from the talent advantage. First, they attract more talented, more experienced members who seek new challenges and championships. Second, they attract them often from lower-placing corps, depriving those corps of some of the members who might contribute more than average. Likewise, quality staff are similarly attracted to the prospect of working with the increased talent and resources. They too often choose the higher-placing corps as the expense of the lower ranks. It's unfortunate, but natural. HH
