MUSICandCHARACTER
IMO the placement makes no difference at all. They will have the time of their lives....I'd trade in a few spots at finals for the chance to tour Europe any day of the week, if it came to that. I agree!! I don't think it hurts that much. BDs show last year was not going to contend for first. But I would take fourth and a trip to Europe. You can march for years in a top corps and not be assured of a ring. You can march with the Glassmen and be assured of a European trip and standing O's. The Glassmen are not usually challenging for the ring anyway and I doubt the trip to Europe will knock them out of finals. Send me to Europe any day! I think it is always a great thing when a corps goes to Europe. I would have gone with BD last year even if I knew AHEAD of time that a fourth place finish was coming. ssorrell
I'd love to go to Europe, which would make up for any slip in the competition that might be experienced, but as a former administrator for a corps, I cringe at the thought of traveling abroad with 135+ people! gottalovit
I think it is fantastic they are going to Europe. If they have the finances to do it, then I am all for it. Although the fans in the states will miss them for a couple of weeks, it is awesome that they get to perform in Europe, and the people there will get to enjoy their show. As far as placement goes, I personally don't think placement is all that important. Here's hoping to a safe and amazing summer for the Glassmen. MUSICandCHARACTER
I'd love to go to Europe, which would make up for any slip in the competition that might be experienced, but as a former administrator for a corps, I cringe at the thought of traveling abroad with 135+ people! Our former drum major in HS started a travel agency. When our band director retired from school service, the drum major hired him as a specialist to arrange travel for bands, corps and large groups. He has done very well -- he knew what drove him crazy and makes sure to take care of those things. Nothing like working with a travel agent that is a former band director who knows EXACTLY what you are in for -- makes the trip a lot easy. ssorrell
I don't necessarily mean that traveling while supervising a bunch of young adults it what would stress me out...it's all the global unrest that would keep me safe at home. Who knows what will happen in the world by the time that trip happens?
geneseo_bari_87
I went to Europe in 1987, then came back and we came in 25th.Carry on. And who was it that beat us by 3.2 in Marion, OH that year, then ended up in 31st in quarterfinals a week later? Hmmmmmm, lemmesee.... Oh yeah - THE GLASSMEN. I guess they should have gone to Europe that year. B)
Silver_King
some would argue that Blue Devils drop in placement would be contributed to the Europe trip, but I disagree... Blue Devils had a not-so-good designed show this year.I dont know, really. I'm indifferent. I think on one hand, it gives the corps a good perspective on the other side, which could lead to better "character." I also think it causes a handicap against the Glassmen. They wont see, or compete against any corps for two weeks, which leaves them a blindspot going into an essential part of the season. Like you said though, it probably gives the corps good fan support, and if Glassmen truly have a great show this year, I dont know they will have anything to worry about. ~>conner THE REASON SCV DID BAD WAS BECAUSE BD WASN'T THERE SO THE AREA GLASSMEN FROM WILL WELL NOT CHANGE AS MUCH BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT A TOP5 AREA CORP

acanadeanhick
I was actually in europe at the same time as BD with a concert musical group from Arizona headed up by the father of the director of Arizona Academy. Some people stopped a few of us in the louvre, in the Mona Lisa room, to ask who all of us were wearing the matching tour jackets, and we explained it to him, and turns out they were all with the Blue Devils, and had even heard about us to some degree and stuff. It was really cool, and it was funny to run into a bunch of drum corps people in front of the Mona Lisa. Trips to europe are definately a really fun experience, it's really cool that the Gladdmen get to do that AND drum corps, instead of having to chose like I did.
