Mixed feelings on this one. I am mostly against this for personal reasons. Like many others, my family and I build our vacation around championships. It costs a lot of money ($3,000 - $4,000 avg. the last 3 years). You'll be surprised how many people do set their vacations around chamionships. My wife and I after all have to take time off work as do many others. That eats a good chunk of vacation time we both have. You'll also be surprised just how many families attend chamionships. I talk with many each year.

I also don't find Indianapolis interesting at all. I've been there for BOA Chamionships twice. After awhile it got stale and I felt no need to go back. I'm sorry to those who say check out the museums and zoos. That stuff does not interest us at all. We like exploring the scenery (like Denver, Boston area and yes even Wisconsin which we think is gourgeous), going to theme parks (like Orlando), visiting other Native American tribes (we're NA), going to the casinos, etc.

I know my family will not want to go to the same site every year. I will probably go by myself after the second year and then we'll see from there just how much I want to continue to support the corps and DCI.

For those who argue that BOA has a strong attendance. Most of that crowd is moms and dads, recently gradulated alumni and bands that did not make the cut earlier in the week. Very few actual fans who have no connection to BOA attend regularly. DCI on the other hand has quite a few fans who never marched, but are die-hard fans. Then there are the fans like me who marched finals several years and have attended 12 of the past 13 chamionships since aging out.

If this is going to make the activity even stronger I will support it grudgingly. BUT...if DCI is doing this to make their life more easy and ride the coattails of Indy then they're only hurting themselves, complacency is never good. Like Hoppy, I suspect DCI has no major plans in the work, they're just doing this for convenience. In 10 years my hope is to see DCI as a major player as far as clout and strength of organization goes (a major player). If not Indy was a failure.

Where will Div II/III perform? Has anyone said anything about that?
Probably some middle school-sized stadium like they have in the last few years, with some sub-par multimedia sold afterwards. :P

Will div. II/III even be around for this to be an issue? :(

That would be the new Cardinals Stadium in Arizona. The field is grass and sits outside except for game days.

Maybe another feature they should consider for that stadium is a professional football team. :P

I respect the opinions of those who think that, for the fan, this might not be the best thing with regards to a rotating city. However I think we have to get past the whole "DCI is going into this blindly" thing.

"Like Hoppy, I suspect DCI has no major plans in the work, they're just doing this for convenience."

I respected everything else you said, Whiskey, and to some extent I think you're right. However I just can't believe that rationally we're discussing the idea that DCI would go into this "blindly", and for "convenience". If people did stuff at DCI without much thought, I'd have to doubt they'd be around.

The merit of the move is one thing to discuss. But can we please get past the "DCI isn't thinking and just letting it happen" schtick? As one director told me once, "That dog don't hunt, son."

The regionals are spread across the country. No one cares that they're stagnant because most people can drive a moderate distance to a regional. Not everyone can drive to finals for their only chance to see the corps at their best. I would assume that most of the people who fly to finals are dedicated fans and parents.

Accoustics also effect the members. I've never had a real problem adjusting to domes but many members do and the staff always make a big deal out of it. I also don't want to hear a rim shot reverb for 20 seconds after a release on the CD. If there is a retractable roof that will soon be up, then you can retract this side of my argument.

For me and I'm sure a lot of other fans, it's exciting to go to a new place. How many people felt thrilled when they found out finals were in Denver or Foxboro? I know I was. Now that I'm aged out, I'm going to plan some vacations around finals, which a lot of other people do too. Indy isn't that exciting of a city to have me wanting to go back year after year for anything but drum corps. Like posted earlier, I would probably just come in for a couple of days. The thrill of finals just doesn't seem as exciting when if it were in the same spot year after year.

I'm sure most people can understand how much of a pain in the neck it is to secure a finals sight. We just have that expectation now and we know it can happen and does every year, with a couple exceptions like 96-98. By the way, does anyone now the attendance number from those years in Orlando? That would be interesting to look at.

Anyways, personal opinion that I'd like to keep finals moving around the country.

numbers in Orlando did drop, but part of that wasn't due to a repat, but more due to the fact that Orlando itself had a ton of complaints, as it did in 03.

Madison did well as did KC when they ran back to back in the 80's.

#1 DCI should have 1 trial-run year at this stadium to see what is like.

#2 10 years is far too long if it is all right in a row, if it is spread out over lets say 25 years, then maybe ok.

#3 other then financial reasons, why keep it in one place all the time? DCI's financially back on their feet, so no need to stay in one place if you dont need to (think orlando)

#4 By keeping it in one place, they could possibly bc hurting the activity, bc this open finals up only to people who are financially well enough to travel, get a hotel, and attend finals. What if you're a 16 year old from FL and are really into drum corps yet you have no way of getting to Indy? that can disuade you a little. or try the inverse, that if you're not too interested in DCI, but its in your town so you say what the heck and go and become a fan for life? not possible if it stays in 1 place all the time.

#5, if you ask me, DCI should hold finals in places where the marching band and music programs are in trouble, or not really prevelant. Spark some interest and life into those bleak musical economies, and you might get fans for life, or at least something good might come out of it.

right on especially about #4...isn't their big campaign about the kids??

since not everywhere has regionals, moving finals around is an awesome way to get kids in ever year and expose kids from all over the country to finals.

not every state or major market has a regional for kids to get to.
