FlamInvert122
Thought this would be a unique topic, especially for all of us drummers out there. Simple enough, rank who you think the best current/former battery arrangers are... this excludes pit. Here are mine: 1. Bret Kuhn - I was pretty disappointed to hear about him leaving Cavies. His writing fit better with the brass/ensemble than anyone else's, IMO. Plus it was just friggin cool stuff. 2. Jim Casella - Perfect replacement for Kuhn I thought. Loved his stuff with SCV... and again, very orchestral style and I like that a lot. 3. Mike McIntosh - This guy made the Bluecoats into the stellar line they are today in just 2 short years. Incredible stuff. Bluecoats are throwing down this year with 10 snares, which you don't see much of anymore. 4. Tom Aungst - Writes a lot of notes, and extremely difficult technical licks... However, his writing isn't very orchestral (IMO) and more often than not sounds like just trying to cram as many notes into a certain space as possible. I'd really like to hear more dynamic contrast as well. Your thoughts? *edited for spelling* Edited June 30, 2006 by FlamInvert122

bssop97
From a brass guys perspective. 1. Cassella- It's musical and it grooves 2. Thom Hannum - Listening to his lines is like listening to good jazz. It's understated and brillant. 3. Yoda- Some of that late 80's SCV stuff... oh my. 4. Tom Float - Can I have more flams? 5. Mark Thurston - I love the 90-94 X-men lines. Bluefan
Jim Casella - I believe no other arranger has done a better job integrating the battery with the rest of the corps. If you can think of another, please share, I'd looove to give a listen. I know this excludes pit, but I have to mention my mild obsession with the music of Tom Rarick of the Bluecoats, he and McIntosh do GREAT things together.
