The size of that bass on the far right....my God...I feel for the guy's lower back.

Nothing to it. I carried the same size bass in 77, but I wore mine higher so my back wouldn't flake out. I think that's why we scored ahead of Freelancers at prelims

Gotta love Float, always on us for posture, probably saved my back form worse problems.

Side note; to start the season we were using the chrome plated, steel reinforced, lead lined drums from 76. When we got to Indianapolis on first tour our new Slingerlands were waiting for us. Could pick up and hook up my new drum with one hand it was so light.

When it came showtime it started to rain so we piled into the bus and continued warming up on the seats. When the rain stopped we got out, lined up and went into the stadium to play. The basses always carried our drums off our hips and hooked up on the line, except I forgot my harness on the bus, which is why the crowd saw a streak in blue run out of the stadium. Got to the bus and it was locked, couldn't find the bus driver. Bob Duggan, Oaklands Director, had come back to see what the problem was and happened to have a box of old snare slings in his camper. I grabbed two and raced back into the stadium, strapping them on as I went. I got to the line hooked on and realized one of the slings was too long. then the drum major said mark time mark, too late to fix it. I did the whole show holding my drum up with my left hand and playing all my parts on the right - I did have lots of 16th and 24th note patterns to cover. We, the line, laugh about it now, but it wasn't so funny then.

John

I'm curious, who are the snare drummers?

Regards,

John

been trying to remember who they were,,, i believe one is John Walker,,

Our corps avaerage age in 76 and 77 was 18/19

most aged out,, some left for other obligations like university and college,, some just plain achieved what they wanted,, a national championship.. so the size of the corps went from around 80 in '77 to 45-50 in 78.. The average age became maybe 15. A couple of old pharts stayed on,,I went to KW Northstar for part of a season, but couldn't do the money thing and college and tour yadda yadda,, so i came back to this corps,, marched mellophone. We pulled out of competition with a largely rookie corps and incomplete show by mid july i think... came backt he next year in 79, i started as drum major until work pulled me away.....

but i still cant' remember those snares,,, lol....

but, hell, i can't tell you all the drummers in the almuni corps i march with...

If it's United Alumni I can do that too. Aging, who needs it.

Boston 1979. Part of that great 25 man hornline.

Didn't they have a small horn line in 1982 as well?

They may have had a line the same size in 82 but the 79 line was just outstanding.

If memory serves me correct Boston went on right after Renegades (NY) at World Open. We had 48 horns and they were smaller and blew us away.

They may have had a line the same size in 82 but the 79 line was just outstanding.
