EndzoneEric Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 After spending a little time today peeking at some of the long-forgotten "specialty" videos which aren't in my personal legacy collection, I came to the conclusion that this new offering from DCI is something that could be actually have a much greater impact on current and future drum corps participants than just "entertainment" in the here-and-now. -- Unless a specific corps makes its historical archives available to its members, this might be the first opportunity some young people get to experience the audio/visual legacy of their organizations... and its relevance to the bigger world of competitive drum corps. -- This could help to "fill in the blanks" for relative newcomers who have heard some of the folklore surrounding the "back in the day" crowd. -- It could also serve to underscore why some of us are so passionate about how things used to be, and how we might be frustrated with the "evolution" which has taken place to get us to where we are today. -- There is now a way to see things that haven't until now been offered to the public. -- I'm sure there are many more! I realize its only a repository for audio and video. But it really got me to thinking about the fact that kids who march in drum corps today don't really get to see all that much drum corps. I know that might sound crazy... but at most shows I've been to in the past few years, it seems that the corps arrive, warm up, perform, eat dinner, practice in the parking lot, socialize a bit, and leave to go to the next show. They don't get to watch their competitors or their friends perform, and they don't necessarily get to become rabid fans of drum corps "the activity" other than within the walls of their own organization. Maybe the Fan Network is the first thing to come along in a while to rekindle some of those sorts of things. I hope it does. Quote
FTNK Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 I agree, it's a great thing, though I don't agree with the "frustrated with the evolution" part, and think from another perspective that it will prove how much the overall quality of both corps performance and design has increased. Quote

I don't know about that. I think it will show how homogenous the activity has become. The overall quality has become "medium". The highs and lows have been removed. In my mind this not a bad comment. The love has been spread out between many corps. Quote
FTNK Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 I maintain that the level of achievement for every corps the top 5 in 2007 is almost definitely higher than, say, SCV '89. Quote
jjeffeory Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 (edited) I maintain that the level of achievement for every corps the top 5 in 2007 is almost definitely higher than, say, SCV '89. That's a bad example for me. I much preferred SCV '88 and every top 5 show in 2007 over SCV '89... There were other shows in '89 that were "better" packages to me than SCV ( Cavaliers, Phantom) I know, I'm in the minority on that one. I would still disagree with you if you said "that the level of achievement for every corps in the top 5 in 2007 is almost definitely higher than, say, Star '90 ( a third place show )" Edited May 16, 2008 by jjeffeory Quote
charphar Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 (edited) Now if only they'd add some video of the Muchachos, say from 1972-1975... (Anybody know where some Muchachos video IS available?) Edited May 16, 2008 by charphar Quote

I have personally taken all of the video tapes out of the Blue Devils hall, digitized them, and am making them all available on the Fan Network (don't forget to sign up on the BD pages!). Also, coming soon will be a LOT of historical audio tapes, which you WILL find very interesting! Stay tuned! Quote
