Old Skool Drum Corps for the dinos!
charphar replied to garfield's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Yeah, so the forms are dressed. Way precise! They're instep. Pretty powerful brass music with no stinkin' amps! What's not to love? -
Best location (stadium) to watch Drum Corps
charphar replied to amadorj's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Warhawk Stadium, Whitewater, Wisconsin... I guess that's really Perkins Stadium now...may be it was really that back in the day? -
"Turn DOWN the synths"?!?!?! How about... "Turn OFF the synths!!!!!" Wait...I meant... "Turn OFF the #&%*#*(#) synths!!!!!!!"
-
And the hot pants on the guard...oh, wait...old phart moment...sorry...

What do Synths do exactly?
charphar replied to DeafDrummer's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
Old phart alert here... I'm opposed to the use of synths and amps in principle. In fact, I'm such an old phart that I wholeheartedly subscribe to the "If you can carry it, you can play it" philosophy. Even with all that in mind, I really don't see what the amps/synths add to the shows. One of my students was one of the synth players for a World Class corps this season, and got the nickname "Johnny One Note" pretty early on. That's how much impact the synth had...not much. -
Way back when, in the dark ages...they DID in fact allow "firearms shooting blanks!" It happened at the beginning of the show and at the time limit mark at the end! Sorry...

I really love both the 91 and 92 "City of Angels" shows. In fact, they are in the top five of all my favorites of the "modern era" of drum corps. (Yep, I'm an old phart!) That being said, the last 4 minutes or so of the 1992 edition may be some of the most intense and "noir-ish" (to quote a term from further up the thread!) music ever performed on the field! (OK, I'm backing it up to the 7:30 mark as I type!) Great Stuff! Later edit: OK, so I've just fired up the 91 version! The last 4 minutes or so of that one may be some of the most "fun" and swinging music! And someone earlier in the thread was right about all the music from the original musical...GREAT!

The Racine/Horlick Field Beer Garden
charphar replied to Tom Brace's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
August 1977. Our band director in south Georgia took a load of about 5 or 6 of us on our annual "junket" to DCI Midwest at Whitewater. The Sunday morning after the Whitewater show we were supposed to be headin' up and movin' out back to Georgia. We saw some corps buses on the road, and somehow determined the next stop was Horlick Field in Racine (I'm guessing it was called Horlick Field in 1977 - I don't really remember that part!) Anyway, our band director finally agreed that we could all call our parents back home, and if they were OK with us being gone an extra day, we'd find the show in Racine that night! No money to speak of, no clean clothes, but boy! I do remember eating the best brat I've ever eaten (before or since!) waiting for that show to start! Those WERE the days! B) -

Way back when (the old ph@rt says, with a twinkle in his eye B) )... ~How 'bout the 1974-75 Muchachos' "Marianne"? B) ~How 'bout the 1975 Blue Devils' "Squib Cakes"? B) ~How 'bout 457 corps' mid-1970s versions of "Children of Sanchez"? B) And speaking of contras...(the old ph@rt says, getting ready to duck )... ~How come it only took 4 or 5 contras (in those 457 corps in the mid-1970s, for instance) to sound as good as what, 10, 12-or more today? Just wondering... B)

While we're at it, how 'bout some video of 1975 Muchachos???? (Not really off-topic in the "All-Age Corps" section, is it?) B)
