Scerpella Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 (edited) Was looking at recaps today (I dont usually) and discovered after trying to make things add up that the rational for how they are tabulated is incomprehensible to me. Visual scores consist of Field, Ensemble, and color guard. There are 200 points available for each. They are added together and halved and divided by 10........................um why? Then the next really confusing one, the music performance captions. There is field and ensemble percussion and field and ensemble brass. The four numbers are added together, multiplied by .375 and then divided by 10. Is .375 a golden ratio or something? The last is the Visual Effect and Music Effect and there are two judges for each. So you take Vis effect 1 and 2 add them together and take the average of the two scores. Same is done for the Music effect scores. These two numbers are then simply added together and divided by 10. The three scores (Visual, music performance, and effect scores) are added together and that less any penalties is your score. I think the tic system was much easier to comprehend and straight forward. Edited September 5, 2008 by Scerpella Quote

The three scores (Visual, music performance, and effect scores) are added together and that less any penalties is your score. I'm not seeing what's so confusing, really. The Visual scores are 200 pts each in order to give the judges lots of room, the division involved is to turn 600 pts (the 3 scores added together) into 30pts. The .375 factor is to turn 800 pts (the four music scores added together) into 300 pts (divided by 10, that's your next 30 pts) The effect scores are added together and divided by 10 to give you the last 40 pts. 30 + 30 + 40 = 100. The weight of the captions are normalized so that a perfect score is 100 pts. Nothing confusing there, really. I think the tic system was much easier to comprehend and straight forward. Ooooh, now I get the point of this thread. Nevermind. Quote
Jeff Ream Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 and remember, tics could be just as subjective as what we have today Quote
HornsUp Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 What's really scary is ------ the OP works at a bank. Would you trust him compounding your interest ??? (Let's not tell him abouth the era when the DCA sheets totalled 105 points.) Quote

jonasquad Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 MoonHill nailed it. It's not that complex. Don't panic. I get the scoring system. It's the numbers they assign that flummox me. Quote
MrKlark Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 This whole scoring thing has probably been beaten to death ever since...well, ever since. You can use any system you want - long division, calculus, inverse squares (???!!!) No matter what you do, no matter how you score it, judging anything subjectively will always be open to interpretation, second guessing and Monday morning quarterbacking - its a subjective system and unfortunately Drum Corps - like any other 'judged' event - can never be anything else. I grew up with Drum Corps during the 'tic' era, and even then, there were major problems - political and otherwise. Instant replay on major sporting events can't even get it right all the time, so just live within the system we've got - there's nothing better right now. --Rich Quote
