Finals week, 3 different judging panels felt 'Machine' was the winning show of 06.

I think if they redid 96, some people might get upset. I don't think it would be a wise choice...96 was a great corps, a great show, and a great end to the season. No need to re-do it IMO.

100% agreement! They should not remake a winning show. SCV redid phantom of the opera because they just missed winning and they knew they could improve the show. Even though I still feel they shouldn't have done it twice in a row, they won the 2nd time. Winning isnt everything though! If that were the case Pacific Crest and Mandarins wouldnt be competing would they?

Faust didnt win because there was dirt in their show. Machine was an incredibly solid show and they had just as much talent as phantom. And as he said, judges gave them higher caption scores for a week straight. That makes it pretty unanimous!

1. Cavaliers and 'Machine' were better.

2. They would get blown away. Mid-90's drum corps, top-to-bottom, cannot compete in today's environment. Regardless of which you enjoy more, it simply can't compete.

1. Machine was better according to the judges.

2. Different horns (from G to B flat), different type of corps.

I'm standing by my conspiracy theory that the Phantom staff has a plan to do shows they think they should have won a decade or so later.

Staff member: "Hey, remember that time we got second place? Well, what if we did that show AGAIN, but better and do it every decade or so until we win!"

If you are looking for something specific, then it would be their visual program that held them back.

Not only was Machine better, it took until the very last night of the season for the judges to decide that Faust was 0.3 better than The Godfather, Part Blue.

1. Cavies visual program was better

2. No, just no. Some things are sacred.

As has been discussed before, it was not unusual for a corps to repeat selections from year to year before and even into the DCI era, some of them becoming synonymous with the corps identity. In fact, the first DCI champion, the Anaheim Kingsmen, repeated the entire repertoire from 1971 in 1972. There was some tweaking of the arrangements and the drum solos were different, but for all intents and purposes it was intact for two consecutive years. (27th Lancers did the same in 1979-80, almost taking the title from BD in 1980.)

Part of the reason for that was that the Kingsmen had some internal turmoil going on during the winter and into the spring. Since the summer tour was so much shorter in those days, one could state without too much debate that the 1972 Kingsmen was a 12-week drum corps. The rehearsals that eventually led to the championship didn't really start in earnest until late May. VK was less than 6 points behind them at their first meeting in June. Though I can't find any other competition results for VK and Kingsmen for the rest of that season (Kingsmen had dropped out of the local circuit), I can extrapolate from competition with other corps that competed at DCI that year. In early September we were over 20 points behind SCV who had placed third at DCI championships.

Because they only had to relearn some slight adjustments to the arrangements and new drill to accompany them, and had a high veteran retention plus the addition of some very talented imports, the Kingsmen were able to fast-track their show to titles at CYO, US Open and DCI. They also had the smallest hornline to ever win a championship in DCI history. IIRC, they had 48 brass.

That was then, this is now. Signature songs have kinda gone by the wayside and judges and audiences alike have adopted a "what have you done for me lately?" attitude. To do a complete repeat of a show now would not win, IMO. Even Regiment greatly overhauled the Spartacus show to compete in 2008. While I missed some of the elements of the 81 and 82 productions, there was enough to satisfy me and new things to enjoy as well.
