garfield Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Points: Cesario: the production of the whole evening is the point. "What makes...the entire evening...a better show?" Phantom's Renick: Between corps "is just poor production". "Instead of trying to describe what people should do in their shows, we should let people do what they want to do in their shows." "Get rid of some of the rules and people will come up with more creative things than you could ever imagine." Oliviero: Group Judging! "I wonder if you'd trust us enough..." (Comment: They're going to need a lot longer post show.) A judging "chairman". "A moment to reflect on what you've just done." (as a judge) (Comment to paraphrase: A judge "chairman" to discuss your score with you to make sure your score is consistant with your past scores.) Judging: adding "vocabulary" and "achievement". Post-show review is gone, pre-show discussion between judges and directors now instead. A long discussion on Open Class and the Acheson 2010-2014 Business Plan. Good planning for Open Class! Some great show music between shorts! Quote
jjeffeory Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Points:Cesario: the production of the whole evening is the point. "What makes...the entire evening...a better show?" I have a suggestion for DCI in this regard. Wouldn't bringing back full retreats and maybe even having the corps play themselves off again make the entire evening a better show? I know the justifications for getting rid of all of these things, but that was one of the greatest things to witness at the end of the evening. If DCI is going for more entertainment, this would be one of many things that would help. Phantom's Renick: Between corps "is just poor production". bawker Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 . . .the business plan needs more fleshing out; I think DCI should publish a high-level overview of what Dan wants to accomplish with World and Open class on dci.org. Otherwise (other than the tired "we need less rules to be more creative" argument that's been spun 'round and 'round on both sides), very, very good stuff. edit: As far as more entertainment . . .remember the "instant encores" at Tour Of Champions? Why not bring that back, tweak it a bit and have each corps play an encore tune? Talk about bridging the gap between generations . . .can you imagine if Boston played "Conquest" after their show? Or Cadets hit you with a little RPH after theirs? Quote
Mello Dude Posted March 18, 2010 Posted March 18, 2010 The whole argument about creativity being squashed because it has to be in a particular medium (rules) is a COMPLETE lack of creativity, of that person(s) for a given medium. I'm sorry you have a judged art form that requires SOME rules to compete in to make sense. That is Drum Corps guys. It's like saying every painting that can and should be done CAN'T be done because of the limitations of canvas and paint. They could take a REAL lesson from watching the food network on the show Chopped. They are given a certain amount of time, a certain ingrediant list, and they are to make WONDERFUL food out of stuff that doesn't fit for what they are doing. Quote
