  1. Looking at some old photo's of Upstate New York drum corps and found one with 'Avante Garde' from Saratoga, New York playing matched grip !
  2. I think those were the same ones ! It could have been spring of '88 when I made these for Star. Oh yeah...they were heavy ! They consisted of a 1/4" thick fiberglass shell with my North style lug, and I used a simple Japanese style throw-off and buttplate with a set of standard 20 strand snares that were cut down to accomodate the 10" diameter. They may have taken the strainer and bottom hoop off to cut down a little on the weight and taped the snares to the underside of the batter, but this is how I made them originally. I don't think they made a 10" bottom head yet, but if I remember correctly...we used a diplomat.
  3. I just hate to steal REMO's thunder and I'm sure it's a very cool effect, but just have a listen to Star in 1989...I made the 10" tenor gok-snares that they used ! Rick Rogers, Jr.
  4. Got another one for you: 1986 Rochester Crusaders We decided on matched grip this year because we had a couple of snare players that could play their stones off matched, but looked pretty nasty with traditional. I can't recall, but I believe we were top 4 in percussion !
  5. Yeah...Robbie Robinson was in Crossmen ! Rob Carson was always a West Coaster. Robinson played extremely well, and I believe he won a DCI individuals on snare in the early 80's.
  6. Brian Callahan did Guardsmen (I believe) in 1981, and I know he did Troopers not too long after that ! They most likely played matched grip if he was there at that time.
  7. Yep...you betcha ! 53 and healthier than most 20 year olds...the martial arts thing, ya know ! Love ya Tom !! ...see you in Rochester, and best of luck with Brigs this weekend !
  8. I believe DCA only double panel the visual and music effect at the end of the year !
  9. Crusaders actually have a very good program, but I'm sure it wasn't performed as well as I know they can perform it ! Buy a ticket for Rochester next weekend and wear your corps jacket proudly !
  10. Just a question...didn't J-bars push the drums 'out and away' from the player so drill movement was easier ? Looks to me like this design is moving the drums closer to the body (again), and it appears that the bar would be in the way for movement on the tenor and snare carriers. Obviously, we're not seeing the whole drum connection to the carrier, but this is what I see !
  11. Yeah....I've seen that THERMAL GALLON coffee mug he uses....WOW !!
  12. Never thought of that one ! I play volleyball with officers in corrections and probation. I'll ask them after the game...over beer and wings !
  13. Sorry Lee ! I gave you the name (and even a phone number) of a tenor player that could easily make the Dev's tenor section......but you wouldn't bite ! Anyways, all the good drummers in the East just happen to be in Rochester...and marching with the Crusaders ! Have a wonderful year !
  14. In addition...the Marcus Whitman Winter Percussion Ensemble will also be performing this evening !
  15. Last weekend ! Hilton has the same show they did last year, and most likely... pretty much the same players. Chances are, they kept it as it was and beefed up a few things ! I didn't see them as I was busy with my own group, but we had a couple reputable WGI judges to judge the contest, so I can assume that their show was all of that score...and maybe could have been more !

  17. I assume that's Phoenix, Arizona ! Yeah, Mike Seabrook, a good friend of mine lives around Scottsdale. He's runs the Winter Guard Arizona drumline circuit. I'm sure he would love to get together and drum once in a while. You could probably catch him at any number of winter drumline shows starting about now until the beginning of April. Just get on the Winter Guard Arizona web site and check for shows in your surrounding area. Beautiful area down there ! Last year WGAZ flew me down to judge their drumline Championships in the middle of April. You might enjoy seeing this drumline activity...allot of really good groups down there !
  18. Thanks for the information, but I'm well aware of places that carry products if "I" want to do the work ! I don't want to do the work...I want an "ORIGINAL REPLACEMENT PART" ! If I break a lug do I have to go to a machine shop and try to have a new one machined ? It is the companies responsibility to have adequate replacement parts available....IN THIS COUNTRY ! Actually, if I knew this was going to be a problem I never would have purchased drums from them. I do remember another company that had a similiar problem.....PREMIER !!
  19. Does anyone in the continental US have a Yamaha, 18", blue, bass drum hoop ? I've been asking Yamaha since before the fall marching band season. Anyone else having a problem getting replacement parts ? Please PM me !
