  1. Mike, if you still REALLY feel the need to donate, you can make your check out to "The Cainan Cornelius Fund"... :P No seriously, put your money to use elsewhere in the activity, donate to your favorite corps, sponsor a kid... There are many different ways you can help.
  2. "WE EAT WELL!!" "EAT YOUR CRANBERRIES!!" -Chaz That said, we DID eat very well at Freelancers. Some of the better items were chilimac, Tom's pancakes, cakes, and of course, the tuna casserole!
  3. This thread is not about "NEW SCHOOL vs OLD SCHOOL". We have about another 6 billion threads beating THAT dead horse. Keep this on topic or I will shut it down because if that is all we have to talk about here then the thread has obviously run its course. Thank you
  4. To me there is nothing sadder than watching two selfish individuals hijack an otherwise nice thread and degenerate it into name calling. You know who you are. Now cut it out!
  5. For arguments sake.. so are cigarettes but they kill tens of thousands each year. Just because something is legal doesn't make it right in everyones eyes. I smoke and enjoy it. Others though, take great offense to my smoking so.... Just because amps are legal doesn't mean that everyone has to like them. Personally, I am a purist. Given my choice we would be on 2 valve G bugles with no amps at all. That said, I have listened to it and my take on it is that relatively speaking, it is OK. I would much rather hear a french horn soloist than an amplified voice, but taken in the realms of what is possible, I can just about stomach this. I will give it a chance. I get to see the Cadets for the first time live at Quarterfinals, if this is good, then fine, if on the other hand it sucks, well, I know when I will go get a hot dog or buy something from the souvie stands.
  6. Duplicate topic. The other can be found here.
  7. I am keeping an open mind. In theory I like it (I think) but right now it is a mess. I read Hoppy's email and I realise it is early, but it (the voice) is very pitchy and the singer is trying to outsing 60-something horns. Also there are some intonation issues and tuning issues all around (both brass and the singer), but I think this could be pretty nice by August.
  8. You know, as much as I WANT to dislike them I just CANT. I say this every year and EVERY year, they give me a reason to absolutely love them. I thought 2005 was drum corps at a different level, ala 1993 Star, but unlike Star, they got the credit the duly deserved. Lovin the Tull, Jefferson Airplane vibe and I cant wait tos ee them live!
  9. If you don't have access to the Off Topic Forums, please PM or email BlueDevilLegend for access permissions. This forum is for general DRUM CORPS discussions. Closed.
  10. For the record: I never said that I am excited at the idea of a miced singer. Heck, given my choice, amps and ALL electronics would be done away with and we would still be in the key of G. All I am saying is that drum corps is what it is these days and there is still an awful lot of good stuff out there. I dont like all of it but for me the pros outweigh the cons at the moment. That said, put woodwinds on the field, and I am outta here.
  11. You know, I guess I am slowly beginning to be assimilated because I am sitting back and giving things a chance. I have never been too much of a Cadets fan. That said, I thought that 2005 was awesome. Just like the Garfield Cadets of the early and mid eighties, they (the Cadets) pushed the boundries, whilst not compromising excellence and were rewarded for it. Good for them I say. I will give them a chance in '06. I am going to Nationals and a few shows before. I will view them (and ALL the other corps) with an open mind. If I like them... great. If I dont, I will go get a hot dog, go visit the souvie trucks, whatever. What I will do though, is give them a chance. I marched in the late eighties and early nineties. What we did back then was drastically different than the seventies. That said, those "dinosaurs" from the seventies gave MY generation a chance. They supported us and we were the better off for the experience. Whilst I dont necessarily agree with some of the changes in DCI these days, I have given up fighting and just go to enjoy the spectacle. This generation of kids are doing their thing and they have exactly the same amount of passion and drive as my generation, and the generations before me did. The kids in Concord today want to beat Santa Clara just as much as we (Freelancers) wanted to kick VK's butts back in our day. Nothing has changed. As for Hoppy. Well, I have met the man (although I doubt he would remember me). We had a brief conversation and he seemed genuine. He did NOT strike me as pretentious or arrogant. He did not strike me as an "attention seeker". He IS a very engaging and likeable guy and he IS a visionary. He has a very specific vision of what HE would like DCI to be. That said, George Hopkins alone does not DCI make. There are 20 something other directors that either choose to follow or avoid his proposals. SO to blame George Hopkins or any one person for the "demise" (if you can call it that... what with ESPN and the financial state of individual corps is healthier than it has ever been as a whole) of drum corps is wholly unjust and totally unfair. See YOU all on the 50!
  12. I voted Tan. I think black makes them all look about 3 feet tall. That said, I would like them to come out of left field and emulate something along the linies of an actual British Regiment. Mabey something like this:
  13. Heres one of me in one of my more "reflective" moments.
  14. You know, this REALLY smarts. Here I am, your friendly forum moderator, and I am completely overlooked. Well lets see what is behind curtain number 2, and lets see what you COULD have won.... Oh well, YOUR loss!
  15. Well heck, at least in 4 pages and 39 replies, ONE person said Freelancers... Other than the afore mentioned Freelancers, for me the list would comprise of: Star of Indiana Sky Ryders Black Gold Railmen Suncoast Sound Velvet Knights Marauders Arizona Sun Sunset Regiment Troopers Argonauts Argonne Rebels Bridgemen Dutch Boy (as I remember them... No offense intended to the current incarnation) Stockton Commodores Valley Fever California Dons Emerald Knights Academie Musicale Florida Wave Guardsmen 27th Lancers Memphis Blues Brass Band Northern Aurora Genesseo Knights Patriots And the list could go on and on and on and on............. <**>
  16. Alright ladies... Lets all take a step back and chill out a bit. Simple fact is that LB is NOT the 27th Lancers, if they were, they would use the 27 name and portray much more overt links to 27 than they do. I think that in this case you are both right and both wrong... to a degree.
  17. Duplicate topic. Link in the thread. Closed.
  18. Lets see... King, Deg, Ultratone and I believe a very early model Dynasty as well. Also some were chrome, some were nickel and some were silver. And then there were the Euphoniums... OMFG!! Duct tape, solder, superglue, chewing gum, ROPE... they were held together in a mish mash of different ways... As I recall, James Shatto used to only be able to hold his horn in a certain manner or it would just about literally snap in half! Now THAT is frickin HARDCORE!!
  19. Oh COME ON!! How much could it cost to make a couople hundered patches? First you expect the kids to pay their own way (Which we did not do in Phoenix in 90) and then you cant even give them a patch??!! How much more over budget would this have put DCI? Perhaps $300??
