  1. This show has just expanded by another corps.... Now attending the "Dream Invitational" From San Francisco California...The Renegades! I believe we now have 17 corps. Gonna be a great Friday night show!!
  2. Because they don't fit into the other two catergories???
  3. Jim, Stay at the Radisson (formerly Clarion Riverside). We stayed there in 07 and 08 and every night from Wednesday on, there were plenty of corps minded people hanging out in the bar and foyer area to spend time with. It is the best place and easy to get to after a long I&E/Mini corps evening. Also, it is only about 3-4 miles from the stadium and a short walk to Dinosaur. Even if you are not by yourself and have a group, I would stay there. The Clarion let us park our equipment truck in the taxi stand area in front of the hotel. That was great, except when we tried to leave on 07 and didn't know about the parade. We were checked out and could not go anywhere because we had to back out onto Main to leave. We had to wait for the parade to end before we could leave. I would have rather been in the parade that sit there with nothing to do. 08 we got up earlier to beat the parade.
  4. Sorry I mis-typed that. I did not mean to insinuate that the sound wave travels all the way through the bore of the horn and out the bell, but rather how the sound wave moves within the bore, throughout the horn.
  5. So I see this is posted in the DCA forum and also the DCI open class forum. As you progress in getting this corps up and running, are you planning on entering into DCA or DCI competition? Just curious...good luck with this venture. We can never have too many corps!
  6. According to that wonderful resource known as corpsreps.com, they indicate: and Ira:
  7. My first thought on this is there would be no benefit and could actually cause problems. When you say rifling, of course I think about the rifling of a firearm barrel. Then thinking about the edges of the rifling, which are normally quite pronounced, and the sound wave that travels through the bore of the instrument, if one of the edges of the rifling ended up where a node of the sound wave should be, that would disrupt the sound wave and create pitch and slotting problems throughout the entire range of the horn. Also, to have any real effect to spiral the air flow through the entire horn, the rifling would have to be very deep. Air does not have the same hydrodynamics that say a liquid does. Think about water going down a drain. If you stop the water briefly, due to gravity, it still continues to flow in a spiral motion down the drain. As soon as you stop the air pressure behind the sound, buy tonguing or changing pitch, and the fact that the velocity of the air is relatively low, the air movement through the horn stops and thusly the swirl effect you have created in the mouthpiece and lead pipe stops. The next time you attack a note, even in a 1/16 pattern at a fast tempo, the swirl effect will stop and restart with every note. Now all of that said, I would love to have a mock-up done with clear tubing and put it on a flow bench to see what would really happen to the air flow.
  8. 1 more day! A couple new people should be there this week. At this rate, we should be full by the end of March!!!
  9. I don't think the ice3 skating judges would know how to judge a program written like that....haha
  10. Tom I am so with you on this! For example there was a pairs program where the music had a section of running 1/16 notes and they were just sliding down the ice setting up for their triple. Then when the 1/16 notes ended and the music slowed. Thats when they threw the triple jump. What the heck?!? How was that musical?!?! There was actually one pair that was fairly musical and really fun to watch. I was surprised. But for Garry's original topic, I do not think this is a rehash as one person stated. I think it is very thought provoking and should be something current designers should read and think about. I disagree with designing where one part ends up suffering due to the complexity in the other. I have been told that many times the visual package is written first then the music designed to fit that. Isn't that putting the cart before the horse? Does this really happen? It would explain why occasionally musical thoughts we hear on the field make no sense compared to the rest of the production. I appreciate the old style shows for what they are, and I also enjoy the new shows for what they do. I do not prefer one over the other, but I do not like when the musical writting suffers for the sake of desigining "extreme" drill.
  11. Nope to both. If someone wants to do exhibition, (Freelancers, KAC, etc.) you must contact Mike Nash offline about any requirements and possibilities. director@socaldream.org
  12. Not sure about what time we will go on, but being a Friday it won't be earlier than 5:30. I seem to remember a thread on here about Kingsmen Sr. not fielding this year. Maybe check their website? As for any other groups, that is all up to Mike Nash. Shoot him an email: director@socaldream.org
  13. This is going to be a huge undertaking for SoCal Dream and as such, we have partnered with the "Norco Blue Diamond Brigade" to make sure we have enough people to make the show run smoothly and be an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. This is obviously a DCi show since there are not enough DCA corps out this way, but as a DCA participant, we are proud to have been considered to host a DCi show. If you find yourself in the SoCal area on July 16th, come on out and help support SoCal Dream by attending the show. For more information and tickets, please go to the Dream Invitational website Unfortunately the only "All Age" corps participating is SoCal Dream, but other corps scheduled to perform include: The Academy - Tempe, AZ Blue Devils B - Concord, CA Blue Devils C - Concord, CA Cascades - Seattle, WA Gold - Hawthorne, CA Impulse - Buena Park, CA Incognito - Orange, CA Mandarins - Sacramento, CA Oregon Crusaders - Portland, OR Pacific Crest - Diamond Bar, CA Santa Clara Vanguard Cadets - Santa Clara, CA Velvet Knights - Pasadena, CA July 16, 2010 Gates open at 4:00pm Show starts at 5:30pm Eleanor Roosevelt High School 7447 Cleveland Ave. Corona, CA 92880 You can find out more and see our special ticket pricing and package price by going to the Dream Invitational website
  14. In my time there, I never heard anything negative said about the band or their name. We were actually pretty well respected. Rose Parade trivia for you, as it has been told to me: "The Big Brown Music Machine" remains the only college/university band to have marched in the Rose Parade without having the football team playing in the Rose Bowl. Prior to, and ever since, the only college bands in the parade each year are those from the two schools whose teams are playing in the Rose Bowl game.
  15. Thanks to everyone who responded to the poll. After it was posted, I realized I should have somehow had eras attached to the folded corps question so I could properly remove those responses from the totals. But you can only post 3 questions. Thats ok though, the results are still interesting. Thanks again.
  16. We just use clear plastic hose bought form Home Depot. Works well and is cheap. If you want to buy a specifically designed item, Yamaha sells their "Tuba Feet":
  17. Hey CitBos, Your signature goes directly to the heart of what I am asking in the poll. Nice! I am not intending to shun or leave out Open class, I am just asking about World class right now. Open will be later.
  18. Just a poll to find out marching experience. Not really scientific. Please pay attention to the years in the answers. The eras are selected based on my own personal feelings of different times of drum corps and general lifestyle of the country and nothing to do with rules or instrument changes. If you marched a DCA corps prior to a DCI World corps, answer yes to the "Open prior to World" question. I am most interested in comparing multiple years of marching to whether someone marched an Open(Div II,III) before a World(Div I) corps; and multiple years of marching and if it was with the same corps. The corps itself is irrelevant for this purpose. Thanks for your answers and responses. Edit: I suppose I should also add that I am looking for responses from only those that have marched or are planning to march in the World(Div I) class. Which is why I posted it in the World Class forum.
  19. "Early 80's"????? Yeah and that was 30 years ago when there were only about 2/3 of the cars on the road we now have. You could have probably gone from HB to San Berdoo in about 70 minutes back then. That is now at least an hour and 45 minutes. And FasTrak... Forget the express lanes. They back up just as bad during the heavy traffic times. You just end up paying $5 to $10 to sit in the same traffic.
  20. So with the situation regarding Mr. Flaherty's position with the high school there has been much speculation about the future of Gold. I found this posted on another website. It appears that they have indeed relocated to the San Diego area: They also have a website up www.golddrumcorps.org Good luck Gold and keep up the good work!
  21. Weather is not a problem. If we have some California rain to deal with, we have large indoor areas to hold rehearsal.
  22. It was definately a west coast thing. It was not an official rule, but more of a gentlemen's agreement that they felt was necessary. Now that time has passed, they realized it makes little to no difference in their recruiting efforts if we get younger members. If someone wants to march a DCi corps, they are going to do it. If not, for what ever reason, they are not goin to. If it is because of money or time commitment, then we may be their drum corps option.
  23. It should be mentioned that there is only 1 battery position, 3 front ensemble, and 9 brass spots still open. Unless something drastically changes, the battery will be set this weekend. If you want to be a part of the battery line, you need to be there this weekend. We have a few more new people coming down to be considered for the brass line too. Our target membership number is 65 and we should be at that real soon. If you want to be considered for membership in SoCal Dream this year, you should make contact with us ASAP or be at rehearsal this Sunday.
  24. This is kind of out the window now. We have had much younger members the past couple years and this seems to be continuing. The younger members have a great time so the next year, they bring a friend...and so on.... This past marching band season, we had recruiting booths at a handfull of band competitions too. I always thought it paid us a compliment that the DCi corps directors were worried that we would take away from their membership pool. On the original topic though, I don't think upping the age will have a huge impact on DCA membership, but I do not think the age limit should be raised. Not to say that at age 21 "you should get on with your life", heck many people still have 2 or 3 years to go in college at that point. It is more a separation of youth and adult. Of course that argument depends on when you consider someone to be an adult and no longer a youth. For me, 21 is really the last age when you are granted the last of the privleges a person will get in life, and that is when I feel the separation of youth and adult happens.
