dca weekend thoughts
trptrex replied to Jeff Ream's topic in DCA All-Age Corps and Alumni Corps Show & Event Reviews
Well it sure was a great summer when I got the opportunity to run into my old friend Mike from a few years ago 78 & 79 New Horizon. It just goes to show you that once you have Drum Corps in your blood it is hard to give it up no matter what your age. Congrats to all the Corps for a Great season. -
I first joined the White Sabers When I was in high school back in 76. Then we did only parades and stand still performances. Not sure of what year it was but the White Sabers and the Phantom Revival corps which was also a parade corps from Dalton NY merged together to form the New Horizon corps and competed in the RCA circuit if I am correct. That corps eventually folded and the White Sabers formed back up and did parades again, In 2005 they decided to go into field competition again and the rest speaks for itself.

What does "All Age" look like in the future?
trptrex replied to Arrrr Kissinger's topic in DCA - All-Age Corps Discussions
I have been marching with the White Sabers since they began in DCA in 2005 and I am one of the more seasoned performers on the field at 53. I continue to perform for several reasons. 1. I enjoy it 2. I still feel that I have something to contribute. 3. It is a physical demand on ones body, but that is what keeps me motivated to continue. I have been fortunate enough that the corps has been able place me into the show with my limitations being considered. That may not always be the case. It is my opinion that the activity is one where one must be able to perform on the move! I am not one that can just stand in the pit and play. If at anytime I don't think that I can continue with the physical demands then I will have to retire from the field. -
White Sabers: Good Things Happening!
trptrex replied to WSMike's topic in DCA - All-Age Corps Discussions
Tim is a great addition to the White Sabers 2012. The soprano line is shaping up with a few more spots left. Any horn players or percussionists that haven't found a home come on down to Saberland and you won't be disappointed. The music is fun to play and the people are great. So get off the fence and come on down. Help us make 2012 a great year for the White Sabers!!! -
I would have to agree to # 2 however, we gotta keep on movin on!!!!
-
Come on down and check us out. Join our White Saber Family and the memories will be worth the effort. All Sections have openings. Help make 2010 an unforgettable season!!!!

I feel that this is what is going on. That class A corps are being help back in their scores as not to overcome some of the open class corps. Why can't the class A corps be scored higher? We are not in the same competition with the open class. IMO class A corps don't get the scores or respect that they deserve. If we are in a different class then why shouldn't the Govies be in the 90's etc. To me it doesn't make sense and the whole judging of class A should be different. Then maybe the class A corps will get the scores that they deserve. However, IMO there is a need to take a look at the responsibilities of being a judge. What is a judge's responsibility? How many times throughout the season in some show does a judge dump a corp in some caption and give the excuse that oh its my first read? IMO things like this shouldn't happen. Every corp whether open or class A works hard every week to improve their score and unless they really lay an egg on the field their scores should reflect that. And when we performed at prelims why is it that most all of class A scores dropped!!!? Also why is there a need for a break during prelims in class A and not open? IMO DCA needs to take a hard look at the judging system. Give the class A corps the credit that they deserve. Don't compare us to the open class corps. Remember that it is two different classes and not one.
-
I thought that the Govies did a great job staging their show for their corp. It was well executed and enjoyable to watch. I thought that all the scores at prelims were on the low side. IMO there is a need for corps to provide a challenge to their groups!! to keep the membership. The judges IMO need to look at the difficulty of what is being attempted before they throw a number down. But the way the system is now that isn't going to happen. Does the system need to be tuned up? If we are in this activity just to get into the finals them IMO we are in it for the wrong reason. Don't get me wrong it is a great feeling to be there and everyone should get that opportunity. There were many great moments this weekend!! Every corp that was there should be proud of what they accomplished!! Hope to see you all on the 50 next year.

Now that would be fun. I'll suggest it. Someone would have to have an old roster though, the old memory isn't what it used to be!!
