  1. I just put a post in the better everyday thread. It addresses the take on scores by the students at Pioneer. At least how it was the two years I was involved on the staff.
  2. All I know is that the students at Pioneer do work very, very hard, everyday. I don't know if anyone else noticed, but Pioneer just went through an "Everydays Part 2" for about the past week. They performed in Louisville, KY on July 7th and received a 65.050 and then in Lincoln, NE on July 14th and received a 63.850. Between those two shows they rehearsed. Every day. I'm not in touch with the staff this year, so I'm not sure if they made changes to the show in that week but...it must be frustrating for them to do nothing but rehearse for a full week and come back out almost 1.5 points lower in the scores. Do you think a week of rehearsal actually made them worse? I would bet my life that it did not. Yet that is exactly what the scores seem to be telling these kids. That's the thing about Pioneer, not one of their members is going to give up, stop trying, etc. just because the scores don't match the hard work they know they did. That is why it's not about the scores for the members of Pioneer. They are being competitive, but they are competing against themselves, and in that competition, scores play a negligible role. If you want the kids to know YOU KNOW they're working hard, then CHEER for them! If Pioneer got the same response from the crowd as the other corps did, do you know what a difference that would make to them? Don't they work just as hard as the other corps? Don't they DESERVE the same response??
  3. they are not 'required' to go...it's not as if they choose not to go they cannot march in the drum corps. i'm pretty sure they're allowed to stay back if they want, but most of the kids went. plus they tried to go to a different denomination each week, although that can be hard with logistics at housing sites.
  4. We should just copy and paste the facebook group.
  5. Depending on the score, the staff could probably file a complaint
  6. Pretty simple. Most moveins are starting this weekend and I noticed more parents seem to be reading these threads. I think some of these may have been listed in other threads, but I thought a central location was a good idea for this summer. Here's mine: -New socks. Nothing feels better on tour than brand new socks. -Homemade goodies. Brownies or cookies are great and easy to share. -Visa check card or walmart card with some money for those midtour stockups. -Pictures from home of the pets or family. -Quarters for laundry day. -Their favorite magazines or the hometown newspaper (if they enjoy keeping up with the news). -If they have newer buses, a new DVD that you know they've been wanting to see. (Most buses now adays have DVD or VCR players, just make sure their corps does before sending). Anyone else have any advice on what to send?
  7. Most of Pio's drumline has been moved in since last weekend in Texas, from what I understand from the staff. Everyone moves in Friday night in Milwaukee. SCV had a camp last weekend and are holding rehearsals all week for those who could move in at that time, as I understand it from their website.
  8. I don't want to get in the middle of this bashing war, and I certainly don't want to step on anyone's toes when it comes to their corps traditions (the one I marched has plenty of our own...) But common sense says to me, if the Cadets sing the song in public places, where people can hear the lyrics, then the lyrics would be common knowledge. Cavaliers yell splooie in public, but do not also yell what it stands for in public. I guess I just see a difference. By the way, if it makes any difference...before they were posted, I had never even HEARD that the cadets had a corps song like that, and it's completely amazing. I will make sure to try and be around sometime when the members sing it, what an amazing tradition. I think we all respect each other here, especially over traditions. Let's just enjoy them for how much they mean to the members of the corps :)
  9. This is all very true. We obviously don't have a full hornline, and would love to have more brass players. If you're looking to march a div 1 drum corps, come to pioneer. We've taught woodwind players, percussionists, and nonmusicians to play a brass instrument, and will continue to do so to anyone who shows up with a willing attitude ready to work hard.
  10. wouldn't it be funny if most of the 'yes' votes were from the same situation? the thought just crossed my mind.
  11. not really. i just got a copy of the finalized brass roster in my email, the numbers they are writing the drill to. just because we put our members school responsibilities over a sunday afternoon performance at a camp doesn't mean that 35 horns is a stretch. it's true that we need more hornline members, and we're no where near 64...but 35 is not a stretch from what i've just received. just wanted to get some solid evidence up here...it's mostly been a lot of speculation as to numbers, which usually only hurts instead of helps..
  12. We do do that with some of the drummers that don't make the line. We teach a lot of people who have never played a brass or even wind instrument how to play the horns from scratch. In fact, one baritone player from my line last year came in knowing how to play the tenor saxophone - he is marching phantom on euphonium this year. Trust me, staff and members are doing everything in their power to put out a competitive corps that is enjoyable to watch. It just doesn't happen over night. Member recruitment and retention is key in the horn and guard lines. ::edited for spelling::
