  1. Well, not exactly, but close enough. 02 is needed for the final step (as an e- acceptor) in the aerobic formation of ATP (1/2O2 + 2H+ + 2e- --> H2O). During anaerobic exercise (say the initial burst of a wind sprint), muscle tissues don't have an adequate O2 supply, so they'll produce ATP anaerobically till the body's increased air intake catches up and the switch to aerobic (citric acid/Kreb/tricarboxyllic cycle) is made. I agree with you (and others) that moves like this are hardly easy. As anyone who has actually done so can attest. Your body is screaming to take more frequent breaths, all the while you're trying to take fewer, deeper breaths and force long periods of controlled exhalation. It takes a lot of hard work and practice to do and I seriously doubt that you'll find any running back heading for the end zone breathing this way.
  2. He was addressing the score, not the judging membership . :P (Now some in the hornline, however, were a little more...direct. Not our finest hour.)
  3. Made me chuckle. I was very proud of the corps this year--way to end strong, once again. But, I would definitely like to see the headrests put to bed--and less dudes in the guard. :P SUTA!
  4. OT, but I can't resist... I had a "sighting" of Vic Firth at my local Bed, Bath & Beyond last week. Well, his picture, anyway-- on the back of a pepper grinder, marketed under his name. Guess I'm behind the times.
  5. I've only seen a video, but I certainly liked what I saw. Very cool show, classic Vanguard--one of my favorites.
  6. Do ageouts still leave their shoes on the field?
  7. Disagree--Sky's a lock for top three. :P
  8. My original comment was more to make a point than anything--that the same people who have been rationalizing that the performers should be thick skinned would almost surely balk at getting a dose of the same, in return. Despite what many have claimed, I don't believe that they'd be cool with getting booed themselves. I don't buy it for a second. (Perhaps, if one were to simply say, "Excuse me, but I believe your behavior is boorish and idiotic," it would alleviate the situation. In this way, they would understand that their behavior was being criticized--not them personally. :) ) I'm also not sure what you mean by "freaking out." Have you heard of instances where people opposed to this have behaved worse than what happened on Thursday night? It seems that some of the pro-booing camp are just as sensitive to criticism.
  9. No flaming, however I would like to point out that this is not an uncommon practice. People just recognize who he is when he's doing it. When I marched at Regiment, our visual staff would always give us a field report during warmup. I'm pretty sure this is done by other corps.
  10. True, but it's relatively limited. (Particularly in comparison to sporting events.)
  11. Does an unpopular drum corps show immediately require boos? IMO, it all depends on when and where you are as to how "okay" booing is. At a Yankees game? Sure, it's part of the "social norm" for that activity. Drum corps? No, in my opinion. Obviously, other people see this differently. If so, then they've got to be just as thick-skinned as they expect the performers to be.
  12. And if you boo, then you've got to have the "cajones" to take it when other people call you out as an idiot for doing it. edit: typing
  13. Agreed. Some of the hardest drill I marched involved curvilinear reshapes. (And yes, you could tell if we marched it poorly.)
  14. Is Finals attendance higher now in the tape-delay age than in the live broadcast days? (I've never seen the numbers)
  15. Right now, they've got tennis and little league baseball on. Nothing obscure but, sadly (for me, at least), nothing to do with DCI either.
  16. IMO, geometric drill does not equate to harder. Some of the hardest drill I had to march involved "curvy" re-shapes. Sometimes, what may look hard from the stands is actually easier, just as what may look easy to an outsider is a royal pain to pull off from the field.
  17. Yeah, I've said several times that, while the cinecast or webcast are nice options, Saturday night is the main event, what everyone is waiting for and wanting to see the most. Duh. ("The play's the thing.") For me, nothing has ever replaced the thrill of watching live Finals performances, and hearing the scores and placements at the same time as the participants and attending crowd. Hitting "refresh" just doesn't cut it. Unfortunately, the prevailing opinion seems to be that we'll never go back to that. Still, I can hope...
  18. In a way, that's kinda what I was referring too, but from the other perspective. (Honestly, I don't have an opinion as to their scoring or placement--haven't been able to see anyone live this year...It's more that I'm an alumnus, they're my favorite corps, and this kind of thing tends to stick in my craw.) I've seen this from both sides of the fence--Regiment fans ###### because they think the corps was underscored, other fans who are either ###### because they think Regiment scored too high or their favorite corps was unjustly scored too low. It doesn't really matter to me what either camp thinks (all opinions, biases, etc) but more that I don't think it's fair that it's "okay" to say Corps X didn't get due credit, but then say fans of Corps Y are homers/haters/honks/whiners, etc. for basically saying the same thing. Believe me, I get as much "tired head" ($1 to The Ticket) hearing "we got screwed" or so and so "got a gift," etc. It's annoying and gets old. But, if some people are going to get called out on this, then everyone should. This stuff almost always seems to fall along party lines. Not surprising, I suppose; human nature. (My wife's sociology degree must be rubbing off.) It's always the same crap, from practically every fan base out there--when "they" complain, it's "whining" but when "we" do--hey, it's the "truth!" Anyway, this is all beside the real point of this weekend: to enjoy some kick ### drum corps. So, as I usually try to do, I'll do my best to keep my atttention on that.
  19. Agreed. As I'm sure you noticed that I didn't agree with the "screwed" comment either.... In fact, my question was intended to clarify whether this term was the main reason you thought he was a whiner and not because he voiced an opinion that Regiment might have been underscored. (Which I took as an echo of what you said--from the opposite perspective--in your post.) I asked this not out of sarcasm, but more... doubtfulness. Yes, I did see that you clarified your statement with "unless," but I took it as more of a backhanded compliment or caveat. If your sentiment was genuine then, of course, I will recant.
  20. Do you think he's a "whiner" because he think's the corps was underscored or because he used the term "screwed?" (Which, btw, I don't agree with.) From a much earlier thread... You (and others) are pretty quick to cry foul if Regiment scores higher than some of your favorites (e.g. Crown, Bluecoats), yet when someone else posts similar thoughts, but from the other side of the pendulum, they're a "whiner." If you honestly wrote this because he thought the corps was "screwed," then whatever. But, if you didn't, then I think it's a little ironic.
  21. Okay, I'll ante up... If DCI made the agreement on Wed that the field would be re-lined, then they should have been held to it. This is their screwup for not taking care of it. If the 'rules are rules,' then 'agreements are agreements.' Had this not been the case, then I think the Cadets would have been much less likely to get the reversal. Same thing if DCI had declined their request to postpone the show-- then The Cadets receive a penalty. But, the moment DCI agreed to halt the show, they lost the right to penalize them (for this specifically--amp trouble etc. would still be just cause). It would be like getting a hall pass to take a leak only to be handed a tardy slip once you got back to the classroom. Yeah, you should have gone in between classes but, once the teacher says, "Okay," then you shouldn't take a hit for it. Just my opinion.
  22. Phantom Regiment needs narration like a bull needs... um, mammary glands.
  23. Very sad news. I can only echo what the others have said--I remember her as a very nice, very talented member of the corps. My thoughts are with her family.
