  1. Found this on the Scouts forum, thought it might be helpful, so here you go: Southwest Airlines offers bonus "rewards" (meaning free flights) programs for college students, and youth fares for others. ** GUARD MEMBERS ** Southwest currently has flights to Denver on sale. Most flights are $49-$79 one way. Here are the details of the Southwest Rapid Rewards program for college students: https://www.southwest.com/rrenroll/college/ * Only open to college students age 18-23 * 4 bonus rewards at enrollment (16 rewards required for a free round trip ticket) * 1 extra bonus reward for each leg (4 total rewards per round trip) * Get 1 free round trip after flying 3 paid round trips (using the signup bonus of 4 credits) * NOT available for anyone under 18 * They will ask for some sort of verification of current college enrollment * TIP: They don't issue rewards based on the cost of the flight, so save the freebies for the more expensive trips if you can. So you can pay for 3 inexpensive short-hops at $100 each and get a free flight anywhere Southwest flies. ALSO, they have youth fares. * NOT cheaper than Wanna Getaway fares, but cheaper than other fares * These are only available when the Wanna fares are sold out, and you must call to book (not online) * Typically only a little more than the Wanna fares Southwest is the only airline not charging a gazillion fees either, so there's no 1st or 2nd bag fee, nor any fees for changing travel plans. For flights booked with their Rapid Rewards program (rewards flights), they just reinstate the rewards and refund the taxes (other airlines charge $100 or more). For paid flights, they charge no fees for the cancellation/change, but you must use the fare within 12 months. If your Rapid Rewards coupons expire (good for a year), you can reinstate them online for another year for $50. The downside is that Southwest doesn't fly into Madison or Milwaukee, but they do fly to most major airports. _________________ Linda Slocum '08-'09-?? Colorguard Mom
  2. Southwind guys- consider Madison As an alumnus of both corps, I can say that lots of things are the same between the two, with lots of the SW staff being Scouts alumni. Any SW guys would be welcome, and there's quite a few guys here like me that marched SW before. Good luck, Southwind, and hurry back. I don't like my first corps being inactive...
  3. mahler, whenever you say anything bad about another corps, no matter how true or trivial, expect that corps fans to be on you like a fat kid on a cupcake. that's how DCP works. you'll get used to it after reading thousands of posts by people up in arms because they took something the wrong way or simply don't agree with someone else or whatever their excuse. it becomes pretty entertaining after a while. i haven't seen phantom's or BD's show this year cause i never cared enough to go back into the stands, so i don't even know what yall are talking about, but it's fun to watch everyone bicker about nothing. man i love this place.
  4. two main things i think of: 1. breath slowly. like in for 4cts, out for 4cts. the longer the better. this slows down your heart rate thus making you less tired. you'll have to fight the temptation to breath quickly, just like in breathing block but nowhere near as hard. 2. breath deeply. inhaling AND exhaling. inhale to your full lung capacity, and exhale it all, not just most of it. this makes the air you take in 100% new air. no stale deoxygenated stuff that stays in your lungs and does you no good (i.e. when you're swimming, and you take in a deep breath for a long time, you have to exhale before you inhale again. that stuff). this gets more oxygen to your muscles in the same amout of breathing. also remember to relax where you're performing. don't tense up, because that not only comes out through your sound, as we all know, but it also makes you tired from all the unneccessary muscle tension. less muscle tension = easier show.
  5. stock- (adj) something normal or usual. happening all the time. gratuitous- (adj) anything unnecessary. like when someone asks a question at the end-of-rehearsal meeting that has already been answered before, thus keeping everyone away from food for another few seconds. science fair- (n) when people make something waaaaaaaay more complicated than it needs to be.
  6. ... i have no idea what's going on..........
  7. "baritones, I couldn't masturbate during lunch today because I had to write these parts for you, so play them better!"
  8. don't forget Oklahoma. Our teachers hate life
  9. who, bigsnareline? I don't remember all his posts and stance on various subjects, but from what I do remember, I usually agree with him. and he's DEFINITELY not the most hostile poster on the forum in my eyes, but hey, it's DCP. Everything is always mistaken and taken out of context and thought to be waaaaaaay more hostile than they are. Hell, if I had my way I'd buy you both a drink and we'd talk drum corps for real (not electronically... not that online disputes aren't fun and all)
  10. you'll prolly be fine. just don't charge your stuff during rehearsal when no one's in the gym. do it at night while you're sleeping or during meals and you should be golden
  11. In 06 after a run through one night, an alum of a different corps who lived in the area gave us a hype speech talking about how great we were doing and yada yada. kinda weird getting a speech from some random local, but cool too. The next day while we were out rehearsing, one of our mello players who was sick and sleeping in the gym woke up and saw the hype speech guy walk into our gym. When he picked up a power strip and gathered all the electronics on it in his hands, our mello player clears his thoat real loud. The guy looks over, smiles, sets the stuff down, and leaves. Good thing someone was in their. Thanks Uber!
  12. gonna have to go with Markus Auralius Waymire on this one. The caption head of life!
  13. This topic is pointless, but it should be kinda funny to see who has and who hasn't seen the shows that everyone always talks about on DCP. I just know there's some people on here that always see posts talking about 95 Scouts, or 89 Phantom, or 80 Spirit, etc., and they think "hmm... never seen that one. I'll have to download it so I can know what they're talking about" and never do. So fess up people! Don't worry, we're not going to rag on you (much...) and who knows, maybe this will get some people to watch more of the shows that have defined drum corps the last few decades and increase the basic knowledge of the drum corps population! As for myself, here we go: "Hi, I'm Jared" (hi Jared) "and I've never seen a Star show"
