That's what I've mentioned to DC folks and kids I've coached/officiated in various sports for decades. Just about any activity one does can be practiced as if you are actually competing. Every throw to second base or home plate should be to the bag/base. Once a corps member is moving while playing there's probably not much need to concentrate on the DM. You've got the beat, you've played the music for months, now use your eyes to check your spacing and alignment. Muscle memory. Quality, not quantity training, uses less energy and leads to better performances.

It is new for the Crusaders to be out West, but they started their pre-season training around May 25th in CA with the first show June 22nd in CA and have had as many rehearsals as the other corps. Being out West has been a positive time for the corps.

Where is everybody? All positive (which is good) I guess.

Try getting the Catholic Church to accept those options.

For those who have marched during the DCI touring era, how did corps handle members who whished to attend a service during the weekend, whether on tour or during monthly camps? Or do they just blow it off during those times? Sorry deity, sorry Mom. (Note: In early 65 BAC stopped off near Rooservelt Stadium in Union, NJ to attend Mass. We came in last. The corps never attended any religious service (as far as I know) since then.)

When the recent discussion about the BD only competing around 20 times this year, I started checking out their calendar. I did not take the time to check the number of shows they've entered in recent years. Maybe they're one of a few corps who can blow off some apperance money, but at the same time, with the talent they usually have on and off the field, there may be something to say about more time off. The amount of energy lost and lack of quality sleep must have some effect on many of the corps members at various times during the season. Also, having good outdoors weather year round might allow them to get the majority of their drill done during monthly camps. The NFL has been a copycat league for years (westcoast offense, nickle/dime packages, etc.), so I wonder if others might cut back some in future years similar to the BD.

Pick a group, team, organization, etc., that has a long history of success and they will get knocked. From way far away, I believe the BD organization has a mentality of being great. Everything, I imagine, has a purpose to succeed from the moment the previous season ends. If you're a major league ball player with long hair and join the Yankees, the hair is gone before you leave the locker room. I imagine the BD having most Mondays off during "Spring training" has a purpose. Everyone is expected to strive to be great from the person driving a support vehicle to the folks working a bingo. By having many successful years and being finacially strong, they attract those who want to experience that success.
