  1. Actually I saw some oher corps using an old marching Timpani wihin the last couple of years! hmmm I want to say this last year but I'm not sure. yes I carried one of those and the worst experience with it was the 1978 black Bart Parade in Concord. aldoc you can spell it any way you want! (you earned it)!!!
  2. I have a real feel 8" and it SUCKS!!!! why? because i bounces all over the place. if I had a cymbal stand to use with it i'm sure it woudn't th0ugh. I wanna get me a Gladstone pad for my old Ludwig Super sensitive 15" that is in storage 25 miles from here..(formerly owned by BD 71-75)!!!
  3. Bottom Line folks we all know who won Drums!!!! WE DID! wasn't this just an amazing year for Drums? After I finally got to see Cadets I am happy to announce that I am so hooked on that show! As far as stick height go's...Wow Cavies just blow my socks off! And musicality...Whoa SCV Clean as ####...Cadets Flashy and in your face BD Musical and kind of flashy but still clean too phantom Regiment. Honerable mention has to go to Pacific Crest! man that is a darn good line for such a young Corps! YEP I think WE win this time! ...any day now the CD will BE here.
  4. Do you like Better of the 80 Solo? (studio or the show)? That is a toughy cuz tone wize the Studio is way over the top but Energy wize the finals show is just amazing! Also what other solo's do you like? I love 80, 82, 84 and 93
  5. I'm totally blown away by 94 Crossmen that is for shure! What ever happened to Bob Bollman? I was much more impressed with BD 2001 than I was with 2003. I think the Most under-rated line EVER is the 87 Blue Devils line for shure! That line was SICK!
  6. listen to the pacific Crest Book! Wow that is a top notch Line!
  7. So that is what the snares are doing on hat back stick thingy! (It's hard to decipher on the DCI Video) So that's you Hulka? Nice! I always loved that show it's like you guys took the 85 show and put a flamethrower to it!!! my fav cavi years are 85, 86, 90, 92, and 95..(Loved 2003 though also)
  8. SCV 75 Because what they were playing at the time they did was just amazing. Also 80, and 82, 27th Lancers for the same reason I really hink the 2001 BD line never got enough credit. They played stuff that was way over the top and Clean too! IMO they won hands down!
  9. We used to use a Baritone player or a Contra to come in and play notes for us as we tuned by ear or used a keyboard. I remember One day at camp Jack Mehan brought us this big device about the size of a shoebox..it was an electronic Tuner. That was also the same day as the birth of Blue Devils "Space Music."
  10. Get a guitar. yea sounds funny but learning how to tune a guitar helps a LOT! On the Apple site there is a program that is for tuning guitars. In it there are all kinds of alternate tunings like dropped D high A etc. It's a Demo but that will give you some ideas. I play guitar in Standard, and for Slide I play Dropped D, raised A and raised E G and C.
  11. ohh so true. i will jus take everything that Rob wrote and add a great big ZAPPA to that list. but, I do have a strange fascination with TV game show themes, TV themes and very Etheral galiope music, accordian music (my brother turned me on to that) and I love real Twangy absolutely rediculosly over done country Music like Gene Whooten! I love the Underdog theme! i Love the background music for Yogi Bear (man i have got to get me some of that). I Love Vince Guiraldi (the "Peanuts" themes). I Love Grand Funk Railroad even after all these years! (Live was my favorite album in the 5th and 6th grades) I Love ESTRADASPHERE! Wow you gotta check these guys out! (Estradasphere.com).
  12. Well after finally getting to see it on PBS...Yes they were definately the best line out there! Nice Job Cadets!!! Just goes to show you...
  13. I think he Dynasy Drums are sooo articulate it is hurting BD's drumline. they are jus too tight I think. The pearl snares have the Best sound but Gawd I hate pearl drums. The hardware just sucks! All Cheap pot metal and hollow sounding if you click them with a fingernail. The Best sounding Tenor drums by far are the old Ludwig and Slingerlands. Dynasty's have the best Deep/Shallow combo sound I think. Yami's are too shallow and Pearls are too Deep.
  14. If pro mark still uses hickory then forget that I hate hickory sticks! (but I don't know if they make Maple sticks) I like the straight American 3-S model. I have some Floats but they are pretty heavy. The Hardimons feel the Best but i have heard they break easy. I have only tried the SJ's once and they seem to be great sticks. the Dennis Delucia sticks are a model i plan on buying they feel great. Aungst and Hanum's i have never tried.
  15. yea at reatreat in 87 Scott Johnson Dropped his 79 ring on the ground and myself and another guy helped him find it. He then told me that was the first year they made them. (That would've sucked if he lost it)!
  16. I didn't even notice this part. just from your discription it sounds like a Float Run. I like inverts and flam fives the best. (flam drags are over rated IMO). the Cadets use of Paradiddles is something most Corps don't even use any more.
  17. As far as the vic firth clips that is all I have heard of thier book this year. I thought I did hear some fives but with that little tiny window you can't see it very well. I'm sure once I get the CD I will be pleasantly surprized. I shure wasn't when I saw them in concord in 2001. If they have VERN working with them I know he would Bail unless they were throwing down. yea I'll have to go check that out. I guess I'm just going by my past experiences of not seeing them play much. But as with 94 you have to really listen to it! They can be really sneaky with some of those parts. I really am getting to appreciate them more and more each day. I guess it goes to show that if it's not right in my face I won't even listen. since switching to guitar and losing alot of the chops I used to have I notice Drummers that I used to not even listen to just because it wasn't balls to the wall in your face. thanks for the heads up!!! I'm gonna try to really disect it and listen harder. yea were all still ###### at the 20 thing in 87. (I was there ).
  18. That pretty much say's it all right there. Both SCV and BD are playing stuff that is so much more progressive than most any other corps. BD's Bass line is playing stuff I never thought I would ever hear. I think BD's biggest problem is the Dyansty drums are just TOO articulate thereby exposing every little note. Cadets have a great line but what they are playing isn't taking too many chances. It's diddle patterns. I Love the paradiddle stuff they do but, where are all the flam rudiments? Another line that really Impressed me is Phantom Regiment. Sure Cadets line is clean but I want to see stuff that makes me go
  19. That dude on Drum Set was wicked! Definately one of my wo favorites of theirs the other is the 87 show!
  20. The Best Bottle Dance by far was done in 92 by VK! NOT! seriously though, when I saw the 92 SCV show in Concord and they did the Bottle Dance I screamed louder than any BD show I ever have. After all those years of seeing SCV whoop the pants off BD it was such a rush to see them doing it. Jerry Seawrite told me on the Track after Retreat at the Concord show in 92 that no way they would win with that show but for once i stood up and said "So what jer that show rocks anyway." That is the only time I have disagreed with my long time friend ...(he was right though)...but SCV 92 still rocks!
  21. For those of you that don't know..The show started off with a single Gun shot and then after (what was it) 11-1/2 minutes two shots signaling the end of judging but GE was judged for the whole 13 minutes. (or was it 12 min.)?
  22. VK always had a killer Hornline. So which one of you guys did the Baritone solo's? Killer Solo's ^OO^ I always liked Bari solo's much more even as a kid in the early 70's.
  23. I just wish they had a different Drum Writer. Thom Hannum Puts me to sleep. zzt zzt diga diga zzt zzt Boring. Drum lines should at least play neat stuff if they are going to play quiet...his stuff sucks! Horn wize though they Rock!
