  1. From what I've been reading it will hurt Cavaliers/Phantom Regiment, and help Cadets/Crown. Blue Devils will win regardless of the panel.
  2. But 500 page threads are obnoxious to try and follow, what with the flame wars and all
  3. You know what they say? "Where are the woodwinds?" Meanwhile, a guy from 72 Suncoast boos from the upper deck because corps X decided to amp their pit feature. How does this make any sense to an outsider? (No offense to Suncoast, not sure they even existed in 1972, just needed a defunct corps to fit the stereotype )
  4. But see, I think it' being held back because it's stuck too far in the past. Big reluctance to increase member limits, increase instrumentation, and make the activity more accessible to kids. Thousands of kids do BOA/HS. A SIGNIFICANTLY smaller percentage do DCI. How can we reduce costs so it's not $3000+ to march for a summer? Why does the tour schedule have to include all these poorly attended HS shows on Monday nights? It is a huge commitment, yes. But I think kids today are more reluctant to spend $3000 (in reality $5K when forgoing summer job wages), and about 90 days straight while sleeping on gym floors and school buses... It is WORTH IT!!! in the end, but these are the changes we need to think about making.
  5. The vast majority of members come from weak HS marching backgrounds. It has always been a competition amongst the staffs of each corps. How else do you seperate two kids from Podunk HS, one who decided to join the top of World Class and the other the bottom of Open? The kids are basically the same; it is the staffs that make corps different.
  6. It doesn't make them arrange differently, but a time limit forces the corps to cut stuff that just doesn't work. VERY RARELY do you see shows that work for the full 12 minutes, so adding more time...I'm not sure what it does for design. I'm more into an X min package that works, rather than "give me more corps!" I do like the idea but I don't think it's as effective as it used to be. music => ::pause:: => "please welcome lolcorps!" => BA BAAA!!!! Fun once in while, but not all the time.
  7. Talking about DCP generalities, no offense to the OP
  8. But then it leaves extra space in the show for that unnecessarily long perc feature, or choppy opening movement that lasts forever, etc...I feel like the 12 min limit is good for the corps. There is not enough melodic flow in the shows today and eliminating the unnecessary musical elements will make the programs more interesting.
  9. But everyone else plateaued as well. Cadets/Crown stuck around mid 94s/95 for the past week. It's not like the other corps pulled any closer in head-to-head competition - a true measure of how everyone is doing. I'd be happy with Cadets/Crown 1-2 in either direction but this is not the year for magic (unless you're a BD fan ).
  10. It was really cool when corps started doing this more often! Now it seems like every corps, every year does it and it's losing its effect. Anyone else have any thoughts on it? Seems like a way to make shows last 13+ minutes...
  11. But even 2008...was not a lock on BD for the title...they were favored but it wasn't as insane as it is this season.
  12. Why does everyone think this championship week is going to be competitive for the 1 slot? There is no evidence whatsoever that BD will lose this title. It's like 02, 05, etc...
  13. 1) Blue Devils 98.550 2) Cadets 3) Carolina Crown 4) Cavaliers 5) SCV 6) Bluecoats 7) Blue Stars 8) Phantom Regiment 9) Boston Crusaders 10) Blue Knights 11) Glassmen 12) Colts 86.750
  14. No. Every year we talk about "is this top 4-5-6 the BEST EVER!?" And every year it feels like there is more competition. As a whole the corps performances have improved over the last decade, but only when the season ends do more complaints come out. They weren't clean enough, their show pacing wasn't good enough to win, etc. I guess BD has a championship quality show since they are still undefeated. Cadets are very very good, but is it something you will remember years from now as a show that SHOULD have won a championship? Crown has had a great year but I'm not sure the visual is enough at this point. And the Cavies are doing well but does it blow your mind like 06 or 02??? Some GREAT performances, but I think of a year like 2000 when there really were two shows that had long lasting value. And you know both totally deserved it. The last week has a habit of changing perceptions
  15. We complain about the current junior corps daily. Not sure what is the big deal when someone comes out and says they don't like the alumni corps encores. People can complain about the Bridgemen, people can complain about BD or the Cadets, I don't see how any of it is any different really. But I do know that when someone criticizes Carolina Crown, or any corps for that matter, DCA or DCI, no one comes out with an immature "tell it to my face jerk" rant.
  16. You must admit, after about 8-10 corps all @ 12 mins each, usually only having 1 or 2 good movements per show, you tend to zone out a little...
  17. There is nothing more annoying than when you know you have a long ride home, the last corps finishes and there's a 10 minute gap... Then a big guy comes out for a sop solo with a hundred behind him basically marking time for 20 minutes...then another stall before retreat... Some of the arrangements are fun, and I'm glad the performers are enjoying it, but if it's going to be more than 10 minutes lets have the performance during an intermission or pre-show, okay? Maybe a pre-show routine and then they come back for one final movement while the scores are being calculated. If you want this kind of drum corps, go to a DCA show, there is plenty of it along with lots of alumni corps having a great time. Kinda scary that people actually want this kind of 70s, standing around blasting instead of the awesome corps we have today
  18. Crown has gotten their respect and a lot of props since the 2007 program. It is deserved. But constant talk about how they get no respect is annoying, because it's untrue and we all know how good Crown has been lately. So let's stop that kind of talk before it gets annoying
  19. But why does the crowd like those shows, and what does "old school" really mean? Can't Phantom get a great crowd reaction for a traditional show as well? It's not all about narration and amps and voice. The music writers for Crown, Cadets, and SCV have given the audience something that moves somewhere, some actual melodies. That is what the crowds like, amplification or not. For all the traditional shows that are good, there are many through the ranks year after year that are just boring...
  20. Cadets closer and ballad is great this year. It's the intro that seems to drag...
  21. Were they on the same captions? Too lazy to check. I knew Crown would get at LEAST a 94.5 yesterday because they're not going to give the winner of the second night something like a 93..I know they are trying to be objective but there is that human element involved and even with the same panels...they compared Crown to SCV, not to Blue Devils/Cadets/Cavies...but it IS a promising result for CC! First show out of Allentown Crown will probably be about .5 ahead of the rest, and I think that's more realistic/accurate. They really recovered from the sickness well! Championships will be insane, especially if CC and others can tighten the gap with BD
